duckworth: i guess it is.ocess of writing the book i came to realize maybe those things i faced when i was younger made me better able and more resilient to overcome the effects of being shot down and wounded. i didn't think of it at the time. when you are a kid you are living your life. i thought i had an adventurous childhood. i followed my dad, who retired from the army in 1972 and worked for the united nations refugee programs so we were in cambodia where my dad was putting up telephone lines until the khmer rouge took over. i went through adversity in my teens when my family fell on hard times. i write about being, people think it as a paradise but we were struggling to eat the next day. although things helped make me more resilient later in life. at the time i was trying to survive. there was no grand plan in the process for me. judy: i want to quote a line, you said i love ugly aircraft, machines that looked like they shouldn't be able to fly. the more brutal, the better. i love the headbanging heavy me

no, i'm a duckworth, and the duckworths have been here since before the revolution. so thiss past year's been really hard on the aapi community because that otherness has always been with us. but now to be the target of hate crimes that is just exploding, and partt of it is because the president of the united states was using hate speech. donald trump was saying things like the kung fu virus and blaming the chinese for the virus and not saying the people's republic of china, but saying chinese. so people were coming up to chinese-americans and committing hate crimes against them. it's been really traumatic for the aapi community. in fact, hate crimes have risen by over 150% in our major cities, over 3,000 cases of reported hate crimes against aapis, and we know that most are never reported. they're reported as slammed vandalism, anything other than a hate crime. >> host: you know, the answer to this might be nothing, but i do wonder if you got the chance to reopen your book now in light of what we're seeing and say anything more in addition to how you address the oth

duckworth: mr.nt, i remember sitting in a house oversight community years ago on the flint water crisis. at the time my oldest daughter abigail was just a year old. i remember looking out into the audience and seeing just a hand holding a baby bottle from the middle of a crowd in that hearing room. that looked like the one that my own baby drank out of, it was ale little bottle. but unlike my daughter's bottle, this one was brown, a muddy, murky brown. i can't begin to imagine what it would have been like to drink that water while i was pregnant or to have no choice but to give it to my baby because the system that i trusted to provide my family clean, safe drinking water failed me. but that kind of nightmare remains the every day reality for far too many parents across the country. it's been seven years since the leaders of the city of flint tried to save a few dollars by swapping out the drinking water supply from the flint system to the detroit water, poisoning 9,000 kids in 18 months. but the da
