dulles and manassas getting gusts to 37.rature and drops it down into the single digits and that is all as a result of our deepening nor'easter that's going to continue to tap that polar vortex air and pull it right back on down warned you yesterday the extreme cold would be the worst part of it in our area. look at these wind chill advisories and wind chill warnings, widespread up and down the midatlantic and the northeast and they're probably going to replace their winter storm warnings with wind chill advisories when you get up to the north and this is conservative. feeling like five to 10 degrees below zero between 10 o'clock tonight and noon friday. i think it could be colder. look at the mountains. five to 25 degrees below zero. that's a wind chill warning. we may see some places feeling like 15 to 20 degrees below zero if our modeling is right. already down into the teens and low 20's. that's your actual air temperature. but what does it feel like? single digits, below zero, two below for winchester, 8 degrees for d.c

people, these of guys behind me among them, never intended to go to dulles airport. they were supposed to go to new york city, and the airport at this hour is still very busy. this is video from earlier and it was busy that as well. than 30 flights at last count that were supposed to go elsewhere were rerouted to dulles because of the weather. you are talking well over 5000 passengers affected. now they'll have to figure out how to get home and a lot will not get home tonight. some folks say the worst part of the whole ordeal was waiting for their luggage in st leave because if you leave you cannot get back in. >> it was like running the same bags over and over. just waited for like hours. >> people were angry in the was yelling going on. until finally the luggage came out. >> we're going to a hotel. we are so tired. live, theset here are some of the folks who got rerouted, wondering how on earth they will get home. smoke them still have multiple flights to go and they were net -- some of them still have multiple flights to go and they were never supposed to land her

many jumbo jets were diverted to dulles. ranch. a lot of the airlines don't service dulles. they had no staff to help the passengers. no one to unload the bags. it made for confusing moments overnight. overnight the passengers slept on cardboard boxes. the staff handed out blankets and pillows. in the morning they gave out doughnut and coffee. after 30 to 40 hours of travel for most of the passengers it was a living nightmare for fliers. she came from paris and thought she was landing in new york city. >> we didn't have anywhere to go. they just left us. >> from moscow to new york. got diverted to washington, d.c. sam: back inside the terminal there were no staff for the foreign carriers means no one was able to get the luggage off the plane. no help with the future flights or hotels. >> representatives shut the doors and called the pol >> trying to get the people, representative last night literally walked out in front of everyone. >> by late this morning the metropolitan airport authority chartered buses to j.f.k. but everyone left without their luggage. most of the strand

now officials at dulles are getting the people where they need to be by bus. marcella robinson spoke to some passengers. >> at this point there's still passengers from three airlines stranded here. the big problem is they don't operate out ott dulles so there's no agents, no ticket counters, no waits for them to get their baggage and that's leading to so much frustration. >> passeng airlines say they left them completely alone. >> we arrived in the airport and abandoned. there was nobody here for norwegian. we were hundreds of people standing on the county course. >> i was flying from moscow. we were supposed to go to jfk br was so bad. during the flight i think two he landing they changed the plans so we had to land in washington dc. >> after hours in the airport the passengers are now being bussed up to jfk. that's only because dulles stepped in and chartered buses for them because they had not heard from the airlines. >> i had the text from norwegian airlines there will be six buses at a quarter past 6:00 and then they contacted them and said now there won'

many of them came on the airlines that don't service dulles. there are more than 20 airplanes that are still on the tarmac. the good news is tonight most of the stranded passengers are back in new york. >> overnight planes bound for new york diverted to dulles on the airlines that don't normally fly here. >> all the hotels are booked. >> sophia arrived on x.l. from france. they had no staff to unload luggage or rebook passengers. >> we didn't have in irto go. this is not the airport. they just left us. they offered us pretzels and bis quets. we don't want pretzels or bis quets -- biscuits. we want our luggage. >> they were so overwhelmed they left and the passengers were sleeping on the cardboard boxes. >> representatives shut doors, airport. >> the police tried to calm the situation. >> there is no capability to get bags offloaded. >> by morning the airport authority hired buses. it didn't matter what airline you were on it was get up and go. all the buses bound for j.f.k. >> the airport helped. they gave us blankets. >> outside on the ramp, m

dulles airport, thousands stranded after their flights were diverted due to that storm that slammed the east coast. let's go to sam sweeney. sam: an unprecedented scene at the down to accommodate all of these stranded airplanes. they finally got them empty late last night, people coming in from moscow, argentina, people brought into the terminal and there was no help because a number of these airlines do not actually have service at the less, so they had no -- dulles, so they had no staff to handle it. the metropolitan airport authority did a wonderful job. many people were sleeping on boxes, but the airport staff got them food and blankets to get them through the night. some people chose to go hotels. a number of them were put on buses up to jfk without their luggage and it could be days before their passengers see their luggage. we just did a tour of the tarmac and we will have another report coming up at 4:00. reporting live, sam sweeney. adrianna: let's get to some live pictures of new york city

sam: the situation here at dulles only continues to get worse. we got word from the airport that a slight that landed from argentina at noon is still sitting on the tarmac with the passengers. 17 flights diverted here from new york. they thought they were going to j.f.k. to find out they had to be bused. by midmorning the new york city airports shut down. flights in the air forced to divert to other airports. the weather wouldn't allow the plane to land. we had to land somewhere. >> by late morning the b. at the dulles they began to pile up. buenos aires, moscow, istanbul,santiago, tokyo. all expecting to go to j.f.k. and instead landing at dulles. >> disappointed. it's been a long flight. they are finally getting back on a bus. destination j.f.k. by mid-afternoon the airlines began telling the passengers no buses wanted to drive to new york. the passengers lined up for a free sandwich. >> terrible. awful. no word. pretty bad. the new york area is red. it's still a nightmare. emirate airline had a flight divert from j.f.k. live after dulles. larr

and here at home -- thousands of passengers were forced to make an unexpected trip to dulles thanks to the snow. passengers on more than 30 flights, that were supposed to go to airports such as jfk or newark, were instead rerouted to dulles due to the storm. many of the rerouted flights were from other countries. some rerouted passengers describe waiting four to seven hours for their luggage after landing. of it's travelers - both intended and unexpected for their patience. so far this morning several flights to new york are still delayed. in these frigid temperatures, crews throughout our area are busy.. racing to fix broken pipes. montgomery county fire department spokesman pete piringer says the cold weather isn't just affecting pipes on the outside. he says inside pipes are impacted as well. with fluctuating temperatures in the next few weeks, he expects to get more calls from homeowners. piringer says to avoid problems with pipes inside, open the bottom underneath your kitchen sink. you can also allow a small amount of water to trickle through the pipes. if you're away, leave your
