national airport is notoriously short, and it's a very busy airport compared to, say, dulles international airport, which is a monstrosity of an airport about 25 miles from here. they just actually have more traffic here than they do out at dulles airport. and so and that's been the issue about adding flights here at reagan national airport. so that plane was coming in on this side onto that short runway. and that's where the collision happened with the with the army helicopter from fort belvoir. fort belvoir is a military base just to the south. it's close to mount vernon, george washington's home just to the south of washington, dc, also along the banks of the potomac river. the thing that has struck me in the past bit, and it's gone quiet here in about the past 30 minutes. for quite a while, we had helicopters up in the air with their big searchlights scanning their beams of light down on the water. they started to get very close to the shoreline here for quite a while, and then they had several different police and fire and rescue boats. and on these piers immediately behind me, that's where s

you have three international airports. reagan, dulles, baltimore. s. you have andrews air force base. you have the helicopter units that are there. there is no -- there is just so much air activity and aviation activity and it's -- you know, compounded by the fact that -- you know, we just -- you know, congress just added more slots to reagan and what i mean by that, they added more airplanes to fly in and out of reagan which is , i think, probably going to be looked at and debated after this incident occurred. but ntsb will get to the bottom of it. now, it will take time, john. you know this. the colgan air crash took over a year. one of the only good things that came out of that crash was we worked on the bill with congress and families to provide more pilot training, more rest for pilots which were recommendations made by the ntsb. that was a good thing. and it did prevent the idea that we've had a crash again since colgan until today. >> john: do you think that this crash will precipitate some new recommendations in terms of all of these aircraft

>> well, we do expect the airport ceo that operates here at reagan national and dulles international indicates that the airport will open at 11 individual carriers, i'm sure are making decisions about their flights. so everybody flying should pay close attention to their airlines. we know that it's absolutely safe to travel to dc, to reagan national, the airports, faa have all given the green light to continue flight operations. we have a lot of federal personnel, dc personnel in the potomac river right now assisting with these recovery efforts. we expect to be working hand in hand with ntsb until we find out every everything that happened. >> now, obviously, this airspace over the potomac is complicated between washington, d.c. and maryland and virginia and all the the federal institutions and security measures in place there. so it's complicated. exactly who runs what at what time. but there are questions this morning about the helicopters that do fly regularly, regularly on a low path over the potomac. but one of the things that we things we have heard from people who live in washi

the dulles international airport, which i believe is about 28 miles away. uh, it just took about the level of disruption. uh, this is likely to cause it, uh, as he was saying this, this is of course very, very busy a very busy airport. yeah, i'm related close down the airport. i think pretty much for the for the night. however, i'm like, you know, this is where i get a bit nervous about making any sort of assumptions. but because the, the pressure past are all these, the pressure female appears to be on the other side of the river that might suggest of airports. operations will be able to resume relatively quickly. but look, i mean, again, i speculate thing i've sold my job. well actually i just probably it is a bad times like this, but yeah, i mean the suggestions that would be that since we're looking at those.
