national airport is notoriously short, and it's a very busy airport compared to, say, dulles international airport, which is a monstrosity of an airport about 25 miles from here. they just actually have more traffic here than they do out at dulles airport. and so and that's been the issue about adding flights here at reagan national airport. so that plane was coming in on this side onto that short runway. and that's where the collision happened with the with the army helicopter from fort belvoir. fort belvoir is a military base just to the south. it's close to mount vernon, george washington's home just to the south of washington, dc, also along the banks of the potomac river. the thing that has struck me in the past bit, and it's gone quiet here in about the past 30 minutes. for quite a while, we had helicopters up in the air with their big searchlights scanning their beams of light down on the water. they started to get very close to the shoreline here for quite a while, and then they had several different police and fire and rescue boats. and on these piers immediately behind me, that's where s

you have three international airports. reagan, dulles, baltimore. s. you have andrews air force base. you have the helicopter units that are there. there is no -- there is just so much air activity and aviation activity and it's -- you know, compounded by the fact that -- you know, we just -- you know, congress just added more slots to reagan and what i mean by that, they added more airplanes to fly in and out of reagan which is , i think, probably going to be looked at and debated after this incident occurred. but ntsb will get to the bottom of it. now, it will take time, john. you know this. the colgan air crash took over a year. one of the only good things that came out of that crash was we worked on the bill with congress and families to provide more pilot training, more rest for pilots which were recommendations made by the ntsb. that was a good thing. and it did prevent the idea that we've had a crash again since colgan until today. >> john: do you think that this crash will precipitate some new recommendations in terms of all of these aircraft

dulles, philadelphia international tomorrow, you may want to move that flight as long as you're not trying to fly out of kc or st. louis for those areas. it will be a debacle tomorrow, at the airports roadsways. there's ice to the south, ice storm warnings for parts of missouri, southern illinois, over towards bowling green, kentucky, could get a half inch of ice, plus the wind. that's means power outages. so far, not too bad, unless you lost power. it's so cold. the power outages in kansas and missouri so far, 14,000. those numbers will go up. the big change for this storm, coming behind it, cold air, the coldest of the season. whatever falls in these areas is going to stick around for a while. because many areas like here temperatures aren't expected to get above freezing for the next week to 10 day which brings to mind the schools and i think many, many kids, all the way from kc to baltimore and desk and philly will have another day of christmas vacation, holiday vacation or maybe two days or maybe three days. but certainly tomorrow and tuesday look very iffy for schools in the mid-atlantic. back to you in new york. rachel: thank you, mike. you're making me cold just looking at
