joining me here at rockefeller center is secretary of education arne duncan. how he hopes to fill the classrooms with a new generation of educators. over the next hour the secretary will be taking questions from college students who are joining us from around the country and from distinguished educators who are here in the audience with us. mr. secretary, it's no secret to us in this room at least that you have some ideas about how we can fill this coming void in our teaching ranks. >> first of all i want to thank you and msnbc for your extraordinary leadership. we think we're going towards a tipping point. your movement has been huge. we do have some ideas. i want to take a moment to talk to young people today, to our college students who may be watching. i want you to think about what you do post graduation, to think about becoming a teacher and think about coming into education. it is tough work. it is not for the faint of heart. you need courage. you need tenacity. you need to believe in your heart that every single student can learn. if you have that, we

and, indeed, secretary duncan, an overhaul is in the works. where are we right now in terms of reform? >> we've made tremendous progress. let me be clear, as a country, we have a long, long way to go. we have to educate our way to a better economy. education is an economic strategy. whp you see us being 20th in math and science, we've fallen in one generation from first to ninth in college graduates. that's unacceptable. we're paying a terrible price in a tough economy because we've lost our way educationally. that's why we're pushing so hard for reform. >> it's important to point out as well, there's a lot of money in the reform movement right now. you got a lot of it. you got billions of dollars. as part of race to the top. president bush started no child left behind. that will be reauthorized, you hope, certainly. where are we with those? you're giving money. but there's a lot more conditions to drive accountability. >> we're not investing in the status quo. with the race to the top, it represents less than 1% of the total k through 12 spen

duncan joining us live from the white house. welcome back, nice to see you. how are you judging the ability to close that opportunity gap? >> what we've seen is tremendous courage on the part of state governors around superintendents, local teachers, principals, people who work very hard. we have standards, the country we're going to stop gumming down standards, stop lying to children's families, telling them they're ready when they're not. secondly, we have 44 states working together to create better -- help us better evaluate student's strengths and weaknesses. i couldn't be more pleased by the progress we've seen. we're going to get where we need to go as a county tr. >> that's great news. when you look at the amount we spend and what we get for it, we spend a huge amount of money on education in this countrcountry. we don't get a good yield. we spend 41% more than an average developed democracy, but rank way down on variables. what do you attribute to the gap? >> well, i think we haven't focused on those building blocks that make a huge difference. we thi

we are now joined by doug duncan / chief economist, fannie mae. it seems that we have a mixed outlook on housing. in your opinion has it bottomed out or not? our forecast is pretty consistent with what the results of the survey say. in this survey 80 percent of people say they feel like housing has bottomed. in particular when they talk about price they figure it will be flat or 1% increase. we may differ a little in that we may think there may be a little more downside to the prices but not a large amount. we do not expect a strong recovery in housing for a while. that will wait on a pickup in employment which we do not see happening for a couple years. there is very modest growth from a historical standpoint. housing is a big piece of that. let's talk about the numbers on existing home sales for example down 32% from 2007. home prices are down 16% from 2007. you said prices could see a little more downside, how much are we talking? it is difficult to tell because of the policy interventions. for example you saw prices actually go up a little bit

education secretary arne duncan. yesterday he said he was a big fan of rhee and thought her leadership was still needed as chancellor of dc's public schools. he's also said he has reached out to both prix and gray to see if he could help to strike a deal between the two. that's kind of what's been going on the past few days. duncan has said he may be speaking with one or bowe of them before -- both of them before the meeting and gray is getting pressure on the other side. it was the dc teachers union who really wanted -- they were big supporters of gray and they want him to fire rhee because she of course fired 266 teachers lassock due to budget reasons. he is getting hit on both sides on this one. >>> today, six months after it was passed by congress, some of the first parts of the health care reform package goes in to affect. -- speaking yesterday in falls church, virginia, president obama said these measures will make health care more affordable. >> you have some basic measures of protection in interacting with th
