tory dunnan joins us live from washington. what did today's report reveal about the state of our economy? >> reporter: it was a mixed bag. there was some good, some bad. this turned quite political after the numbers came out. all right. the unemployment rate dropped to 8.2%. the number of jobs was half from it be ri. president obama giving a speech on jobs and he targeted a specific group. >> right now women are a growing number of bread winners but they're still earning 77 cents for every dollar a man does. even less if you're an african-american or latino women. women are not some monolithic blofnlgt -- bloc. women are not an interest group. >> reporter: we know that the female vote will be increasingly important when the general election rolls. president obama is making a pitch at female voters. this is no surprise. mitt romney's campaign released a statement that said it is increasingly clear the obama economy is not working. that after three years in office the president's excuses have run out. so general election time. w

tory dunnan is joining us from washington, d.c. how significant is this? >> reporter: this is a game changer in the race for the gop nomination. rick santorum took to the stage at this news conference earlier today in pennsylvania. his family members were by his side as he made this major announcement. >> made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential praise for us is over -- race for us is over, for me, we will suspend our campaign effective today. we are not done fighting. >> reporter: this was quite an emotional speech. rick santorum cited personal and professional reasons. you may remember his 3-year-old daughter bella who suffers from a rare genetic disorder was hospitalized over the weekend. rick santorum spent a lot of time at the hospital with her and said that was time to think of his campaign. >> it did cause us to think. the world that we have as parents and her life and with the rest of our family, this was a time for prayer and thought. >> reporter: rick santorum is well behind in the delegate count. his campaign said a few thin
