he joins us live from dupont circle. hi, chris. >> reporter: good evening. dupont circle at rush hour, this is one of the busiest metro stations in the system. 50,000 riders a day. and if you take it, you know the south entrance on 19th street has been closed since february. well, tonight we're going to give you an exclusive look at the construction going on here, and tell you when the south entrance here will be open. >> this thing will never open on time. never. we'll be here in the snow. >> reporter: that's the kind of desperation you hear so often about the closing of the dupont circle metro station's south entrance. over the past eight months they ripped out and replaced all three escalators. in the meantime, passengers have had to use the north entrance which can leave them with a long walk. >> it's too far away. it really is. it's a long stretch. i prefer the other side. >> reporter: the dupont circle station escalators have been among the least reliable in the whole system. in july of 2010, multiple escalator failures caused chaos, endangering thousa

while dupont's stock is down about 2%. or how about restaurants? we keep hearing about all these problems in the industry. >> the house of pain. >> last night we heard from buffalo wild wings. showed a fairly dramatic slowing in the same-store sales. the week before we listened to a disappointing chipotle conference call where we learned same store sales growth had gone from 12% to 8% two quarters ago, now around 4%. based on these losers, you would think the restaurant must be stung by a tectonic shift where people stopped going out to eat, cooking their own wings and stuffing their own burritos. then you get the report that panera bread delivered last night. >> house of pleasure. >> they're in the same business as chipotle and buffalo wild wings, purveyors of finer food, although bwld has liquor. not that i would know. the panera numbers are showing a strengthening, not a weakening, running 6% to 7% in growth. they're doing it as they're putting in price increases, price hikes that the vast majority of other restaurants can't afford to put throug

the dupont numbers at this point. is the quarter of the day. my travel chest owns it. i thought this was one of the situations where dividend would protect it. yield is 3.5. i have to tell you, 3m was not as bad as people thought. operating margins were good. not great sales but it's not as disastrous as futures would indicate but at the same time feels like there needs to be a repeal of the afternoon rally. the dow looks like it was greatly mistaken. >> what caused dupont there? did you look closely? >> i did. frankly the division i thought would be good would be safety. they cited government spending as being disappointed. the reason i say that is 3m safety division wasn't that bad. the ceo has been on "squawk." talked a good game. the ceo has divested the company of some of the more cyclical aspects. you have to hear the call. the actual presentation left way too many questions unanswered. i do think that it's a better company than it used to be. i am surprised of the shortfall that was so painful for this economy.

chemical giant dupont pushed the materials group down.erika mentioned earlier, dupont was among the companies with a disappointing quarter and outlook. earnings per share were 14 cents less than estimates. revenues also came up short. the company will cut 1,500 jobs, blaming half the cuts on a weaker economy. shares fell hard, down 9.1% on heavy volume. it was the leading percentage loser among dow jones industrial stocks. 3m also pressured the dow with shares falling 4.1%. this is the stock's lowest close since late july. it was a familiar refrain. quarterly earnings were less than estimated and revenue was disappointing. the company cut its forecast, thanks in part to a strengthening u.s. dollar cutting into its overseas profit margins. other big names moving after their earnings today included unit technologie dn 1%. u-t-x cut its sales outlook after better than expected earnings. xerox fell 5.1%. it lowered its forecast as sales continue falling. u.p.s. also had disappointing revenues but shares rallied 3%, thanks to growing shipping
