are back as covid cases in the u.s. drop to their lowest levels in a year. there is a concern, however, this morning that has health officials investigating heart problems in a few young people who had recently been vaccinated nbc's tom costello joins us with the latest on all of us. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. let's underscore that. a few young people, teenagers really the headline this morning, a week before memorial day, the country really is starting to get back to normal, and the stats are encouraging. look at these numbers this morning. covid cases now at their lowest level in almost a year, down 20% last week compared to the week before hospitalizations down 15%. more than 60% of all adults have now received at least one shot so far with that, this past weekend felt like it was a return to normal we had parades, sporting events, beaches, concerts, graduations, restaurants packed i was in one of them the cdc is paying close attention, as you mention, to a very small number of cases involving teenagers developing a heart condition after the second dose it is an inflammation of the heart muscle it is not yet clear if there is a link between the vaccine and this condition we only have a few dozen cases reported, very mild symptoms overall. the cdc is investigating it. for parents out there, i'm going to borrow quickly and look at my phone here because symptoms are worth watching severe myocarditis weakens the heart muscle so the rest of the body doesn't get enough blood. the signs and symptoms include chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and arrhythmias really, very few cases so far in a very small number of teenagers. savannah, back to you. >> they don't actually know if there is even a connection yet, but they're investigating so we'll keep our eyes open tom, thank you. >>> despite a cease-fire in the middle east between israel and hamas, tensions rising here in the u.s. with a spike in anti-semitic violence and vandalism. nbc's stephanie gosk is following that story steph, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. the anti-defamation league says that since the latest violence kicked off in the middle east, there has been an 50% increase of anti-semitic attacks here in the united states, including one alleged hate crime here in times square the adl is joining other jewish groups, calling on president biden to do something about it in the heart of new york city, what authorities are calling an act of hate. video capturing a gang-style attack on a jewish man in times square. >> they proceeded to assault me, beat me, kick me, punch me, hit me with crutches, hit me with what looked like flag poles. >> reporter: the assault happening at pro-israeli and pro-palestinian rallies took place in the city. one person is arrested in the attack, the others are at large. police also searching for a group they say yelled at four jewish men and damaged a car outside a brooklyn synagogue, later purgie punching and chasio jewish teens with a baseball bat. >> attack on the jewish community is an attack on all new yorkers. it will not be tolerated >> reporter: the incidents in new york are part of a nationwide rise in anti-semitism. in l.a., this attack on several jewish men outside of a restaurant resulted in one arrest surveillance video of a separate encounter appears to show a jewish man running from a caravan of people, some waving the palestinian flag. >> i really felt that my life was coming to an end >> reporter: a synagogue outside of chicago was damaged former congresswoman gabby giffords tweeting her synagogue in tuscan was also vandalized. writing, despite these actions, we will not be shaken. since the outbreak of violence in the middle east, there have been 17,000 tweets with pro-nazi references. >> bullying, brutalizing, like, that isn't activism. that is anti-semitism, plain and simple >> reporter: the adl joined other jewish groups asking president biden to speak out forcefully against this dangerous trend. the muslim community also seeing a rise in vandalism. authorities reporting an islamic center in brooklyn was defaced with hate graffiti a sacred flag was burned along with graffiti painted outside a mosque in long island. a new wave of hate leading to new concerns across the country. >> the president of the muslim public >>> we are back. 8:13 happy news bode miller and his beautiful wife morgan, the couple announcing they are expecting their eighth child >> yes they are allowing us, what an honor, to publicly reveal the baby's gender here on "today." good morning, bode and morgan. we'll let natalie morales tell the story of how your family has moved forward despite that great personal loss. natalie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah and hoda. as you know, morgan and bode miller lost their beloved 19-month-old daughter emmy in june of 2018 in a tragic drowning accident. since then, they've been spreading the word about water safety they've added three boys to their growing family, and now, this morning, we find out if baby miller number eight is a boy or a girl. >> i am so nervous bode and i have no idea. so we'll see >> reporter: with family and friends gathered for a gender reveal party on sunday, morgan and bode miller were ready to find out if baby number eight would be a boy or a girl [ applause ] >> reporter: it's a girl celebration, cheers, and tears the new baby will be their first girl since losing their 19-month-old daughter emma in a drowning accident in 2018. >> she had such a powerful personality, where she did what she wanted. >> she was such a bright light, and she was determined >> reporter: the millers have been candid about their heartache, hoping to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies. they've taught their own babies to survive in water and have been encouraging others to do the same >> if your child is crawling, they should be floating. if your child is walking, they should be swimming >> reporter: emmy is very much a part of the miller family. >> there is this under current of loss that is never going to go away. >> reporter: the newest miller will join 13-year-old dace, 8-year-old nate, 6-year-old nash, 2-year-old easton and 18 monday twins asher and axle. morgan recently shared her positive pregnancy test with a stunned but excited bode miller. last week, the couple shared their news publicly with the help of "people" magazine. >> finally on our last pregnancy. >> we're at the finish line. >> reporter: 2019, after their twin boys were born, i asked the millers if there was anything they hoped for do you all have a christmas wish >> unrealistic one, another little girl. >> reporter: for the miller family, it's a dream come true >> of course, we are thrilled for them the couple expected to be due in november savannah and hoda? >> happy news. i noticed you were giving us a spoiler with your pink blazer there, nat bode and morgan are with us now. congratulations. it's a girl! >> yes. >> i bet that still sounds good, right, morgan? >> oh, my gosh, we are so excited. >> it was nerve-racking and definitely for that last, about, half a second before -- i was like, wait, this could be either one. we really had no idea. everyone was, i think, really excited and happy. i think, you know, everyone who has been so supportive, it was really, i think, a cool reward and thing to share all together, especially after this last year with covid and everything. it was pretty amazing. >> what a beautiful moment, you guys tell us how you informed all of your other children that there was going to be yet another sibling coming into the family >> how did that go over? >> we told them on st. patrick's day. i planned an elaborate scavenger hunt the end of each clue was their pot of gold. and in their pot of gold had a little treat plus a word, and they all had to pull their words out and mix them together to figure out the sentence, and the sentence said another baby miller coming november 2021. they were at first completely shocked. >> yeah, completely. they were like, wait, what, what we have a baby we were like, no, another one. yesterday was really fun to see how excited they were. >> so excited. >> we know that you would have been overjoyed to have a boy or a girl but let's talk about it, morgan. how much does it mean to you that it's another little girl coming into your life?
