durbin, about rob the voyage -- rod blagojevich's quick, you enabled a election. you said that no appointment by the governor could produce a replacement. today would you just as eagerly advocate elections to fill vacancies? >> i believed at the time and still do that there was such a blow to the body politic by the arrest of the sitting governor, led from his home in handcuffs, that you have a credible replacement the people needed to speak. call shortly thereafter. they talked to me about possibilities. he said, i you talking about being appointed by governor mccoy that? he said, that might help. i said, don't do that. you don't want to be associated with him at this point. it was such a dangerous time in terms of the credibility, the involvement of the public, that i felt the election would be the right way to let the people speak about a successor. now i think the law is in douby. -- doubt. as i understand it, there's a statutory measure for filling a vacancy until the next election, but the courts, at least one ruled that doesn't stand. so the current situati

a new tribune poll shows durbin with 50 percent of the vote, oberweis with 36 percent. that's closer than a poll taken six weeks ago, which had durbin with 55 percent to 32 percent for oberweis. durbin's approval rating is at 48 percent, with 35 percent disapproving and 17 percent having no opinion. the illinois tollway is suing to collect millions of dollars in fines from even more chronic offenders. the tollway filed 47 new lawsuits yesterday, bringing the total to 4- hundred lawsuits over the last two years. the agency is trying to collect eleven- million dollars from habitual violators, who have refused to pay tolls and fines. the lawsuits are specifically targeting commercial customers. the tollway says it hasn't decided yet whether to pursue individual offenders. the health-care information and management systems society show is supposed to be held at mccormick place. they told tourism officials at the show is pulling out because of a dispute over hotel room rates. that same group forced changes in chicago's hyde convention cost when it pulled out in 2009. the con
