so the story i'd like to tell is about an underdog crew of 3,000 sailors on the "uss dwight d. eisenhower" and how they changed their culture for one of the most challenging deployments for the u.s. navy since world war ii. it's a story about leadership at all levels, about sailor grit. so i took over the ship in march of 2023 like steve said. about eight months before this unprecedented deployment. in the red sea. the crew had done back-to-back deployments during covid and never saw a real port call. people joined the navy for many reasons, but among them is the ability to see the world, travel the world and go to places you might not otherwise travel to. this is followed by a challenging shipyard period, common for most ships. the ship wasn't in the best shape coming out of the shipyard, needed a lot of work, which is not uncommon for a ship that's 47 years old. so there were multiple inspections that didn't go well. morale seemed low before i got there. so i got to ride with the ship in february 2023, and i got to experience some of that negativity. so there was kind of a re
