he sent a telegram to dwight eisenhower, urging him to run for president. ronald reagan became a democrat for ike, he did not realize that eisenhower was a republican, the -- so reagan reflected -- i thought he was the man to sit in the white house, and i thought he was a democrat, but i will support ike so he became a . so he became a democrat for ike. by this time, he has switched to the republican party. eisenhower at the gettysburg held a conference to try to improve public outreach for the gop. he wanted to help the gop attract independents, because he had been unhappy with the republican party's poor salesmanship. after all, they had lost the 1960 election to john f. kennedy , and they created a publicity record called "mr. lincoln's party today." the script is in the archives of the eisenhower library and in it, dwight eisenhower, who saw the script and helped plan the publicity record, crossed out some of the original planned wording and wrote these words telling a political philosophy. good republicans have divergent individual beliefs. good so-call

dwight eisenhower becomes president in 1953. eisenhower's the opportunity and the inclination to get more deeply involved. partly because eisenhower was a military man and he understood what military force can and can't accomplish. he kept his distance. he didn't send troops. john kennedy is now president. by this time the force of the revolution in vietnam is gaining strength. kennedy, lacking eisenhower's military background, felt greater pressure to follow the advice of his military advisers who said we need to send military force into vietnam. or we will risk losing vietnam to communism. i will stop here. the premises on which the united states initially sided with the anti-communist forces in vietnam were an artifact of the 1940's. what was not outlandish to believe that communism was it unified threat to the united states and a victory for communism anywhere was a threat to democracy everywhere. by the 1960's that was coming into question. because harry truman and dwight eisenhower and john kennedy had laid down this marker

think of dwight d. eisenhower sending troops to little rock and coming back to newport to speak to the nation on television from the present's house, he said from the office of roosevelt and lincoln. think of jfk one day in june, 1962, he turned on the tv and he saw george wallace standing in a school has door. and kennedy up to that time tried to avoid becoming ensnared in the political cycle of civil rights. he sent word to the television networks that he wanted a half hour of time that evening. when he went on, he had a speech that wasn't finished to introduce a bill that had been written, but he had committed himself. he had grasped the fact that ultimately, there is a moral component to the presidency that cannot be served, not if you -- cannot be shirked, not if you want history's approval. no one better captured the heroic presidency at the height of his powers then clinton rossiter, the premier political scientist of his age. this is how he put it in 1951. "the president is not a gulliver, immobilized by 1
