"i was born standing at attention." in other words, i think dwight eisenhower was probably as rewarding a parent or grandparent as you ever encounter. i think that his -- he was a tough disciplinarian. you respected that. i was sort of awed by it. but i never doubted, and i am positive my father is in the same position, that he cared greatly for us. and, that he was teaching us important things. in hindsight, he was teaching us things that were probably unattainable. how many dwight eisenhower's are there in the world? how many have there ever been? his story is literally, considering abilene, his background, one in 10 million. this is a very far-fetched thing. but he did set standards. in a way that made it impossible not to want to be better. and possible not to feel profound fondness for his energy. i think that's what he dedicated to raising my

dwight eisenhower played in the kansas stately under the name wilson. the eastern carolina league where thorpe played for the rocky mountain railroaders and the highlanders, has so many playing with aliens because -- that it was called the pocahontas league. jim thorpe played as jim for and he never tried to hide it. there are several key factors. one is that all of the powerful white figures who were involved in jim losing his medals, knew exactly what he was doing, starting with pop warner, who had been sending indian athletes to play baseball for years, whose close associate in pennsylvania was the scout who brought jim and his teammates and matt with thorpe at least twice -- and met with thorpe at least twice while playing baseball. once they went hunting in oklahoma. after the story broke that jim thorpe had played baseball, the story broke in worcester, massachusetts in the "worcester telegram." a reporter in worcester heard one of jim's former managers was in town and talked about how he managed jim thorpe. he wrote the story and it became a big

as opposed to, let's say, dwight eisenhower. you wouldn't particularly want tapes because eisenhower was quite reserved and private, as he was in public. same with calvin coolidge. so the point is, i said to harry, i am glad you have decided to open these things, this could be a revolution. why did you do it? and he said, we are doing it for two reasons. number one, the oliver stone law. there was an effort after oliver stone was making his film jfk to get files related to the kennedy assassination open. and he said, i was advised by our legal people that we might not only have a lawsuit of that kind for any of the tapes that deal with the assassination, but also more generally for all the tapes. so, i talked to mrs. johnson. i said, you have got a recommendation for us, which is, should we keep these closed? or should they be opened? and she said, go ahead and open them. essentially, i'm proud of what my husband did. i know that there will be things on them that i don't like because i haven't heard them. but i am confident enou
