and i grew up on the dick van dyke show. they were very clear. you reach a certain age and you'll go see what he wants to your friends house. it's imperative that parents teach values. it's imperative as information becomes plentiful and available. such a challenge to look forward to raising raising kids, but it means that you have to be more careful and you have to really inculcate values. i don't mean back of the hand values, i mean that you have to teach your kids why. my parents were wonderful about this. they never said it was wrong for me to ask a question. they always try to give me the answer and if they didn't have the answer, they try to get the answer. they treated me fiercely from the time i was a kid all the way through my teenage years. treated me as irrational and functioning human being. when i prove that i could earn and deserve responsibility, then they handed me the responsibility. it had to be earned. that's what i recommend in terms of that. in terms of older people getting involved in technology, get on the internet. it's a

eva dykes, she's the first woman to earn all her credits for a ph.d. at radcliffe. she graduated from dunbar, even though in the process of trying to write her dissertation when she went to the south, she couldn't get into certain libraries, they wouldn't let her in. but she still managed to complete it. that was the kind of teaching force that was at dunbar. it also attracted people who had degrees in law. there was a medical doctor who was one of the principals, one was a lawyer, but when someone asked him why he was teaching, he said he does like the paycheck. [laughter] the reputation of the school really grew, and it became, it became a way of life to be at dunbar, and there was a certain code of behavior and certain things were expected of you. and one of the things that i loved reading more than anything in my research were the handbooks with their instructions on how to behave. and i'm going to read a little bit from the handbooks. i'm going to read a little bit, i'll lead up to it. being a dunbar student was a way of life. a strong program was a given and w
