dylan. but at the time, friends and family members who knew him did not believe that was significant because they believed so much in his goodness and the fact that he was a teen, he was experimenting and things would be fine. that is one thing that i would say to people. if suddenly you have a child who gets in trouble as dylan did. he also he also got in trouble in school about the same time. those are warning signs that something could be terribly wrong. we have to do a much better job, certainly i i wish i had done a better job of asking more open-ended questions and to listen without judgment. to listen without trying to fix things but to really listen to try to understand what he was feeling. >> i think some people would say, these are typical teen behaviors, how do you think people should look at it so they know the difference between what is the typical teen behavior they are seen and what needs to be looked into work carefully? >> that is the conundrum. typical teen behaviors can of

why did dylan do this? i know you talk in the book about lots of theories about that, media and others, but i'm interested on how you would respond to that question. >> a child that you have that could take part in a school shooting, the chances are one in millions. this is not something that every parent needs to be worried about the far more dangerous thing for our children is how many of them have thoughts of suicide and self-harm? if we look at a murder suicide, such as the columbine tragedy, murder suicide is a small subset of suicidality. my recommendation is that we focus vy much on trying to understand suicide and trying to prevent suicide. we don't want these things to abrupt into a terrible tragedy. you talked about why it happened and in the book i asked what i think is a more effective question and that is how did this happen. how does one's thinking deteriorate. the way i have come to explain it to myself is a medical model. if we look at suicide inconsiderate to be a health risk, as we would h

i was afraid of even being associated with the tragedy or with dylan. to some degree it exists today still and that's why it was so difficult to decide to publish this book. i continue to meet people who were in the school at the time who were in the room where the teacher died and the trauma that they have lives on. they are still experiencing ptsd from that day, some people sustained injuries in these injuries continue to limit their life, costing them great pain and expense and hardship. it's too huge for me to even begin to comprehend. >> can you talk about yourself and your own journey and kind of where you are now in light of what you experienced, the journey that you've gone through, where are you today?? can you talk a little bit about where you are now? >> i tend to believe that the dylan that was there that day and died that day because of some kind of pathology. because of that pathology, he was a victim of the tragedy just as all the others were victims of the tragedy. i believe this is also true for eric. some people find that a very diffic

dylan did have some trouble in his junior year of high school. he stole something from a parked van. he was assigned to a juvenile diversion program and at that point i was baffled. i couldn't understand why he had done terrible things. and i remember asking the counselor does this mean something, does this mean he needs help, does he need counseling, and at that time nobody seemed to think that he did. he was given an assessment which was the only tool they had at that time to use. he was asked to check off his own feelings about himself and he checked off nothing about feeling suicidal. the only thing he checked off as he needed a jo job and have financial concerns so we spoke with him and we had the support program in place. he promised us he would get his life on track and that he did and that is what was so confounding about all this is because he continued to go to school committee had a job, he applied the four colleges and was accepted and over the next 14 months of his life he did demonstrate to us that he was doing okay and doing well a

senior dylan lewis wrote an essay and it stuck out from the rest. he and his brother and mother went through some extremely hard times when hurricane katrina destroyed their home. >> even though it was a horrific time, i wouldn't, like, change it for anything because when you experience something that tragic, it makes you, like, think of life and makes sure that, like, you don't want to do anything in your life to be put in that situation and go to jail any of that. >> reporter: after relocating to west oakland a couple of years, dylan is a linebacker on the football team with a 3.73 gps. >> my mother said i couldn't play football unless i had a 3.0 gps. so i hit the books and made sure that my grades was up to par, so i could play. >> reporter: his advice for his favorite player draymond is minimal. >> he has to play his game and they will win, basically. >> reporter: he says a few division 2 and 3 schools are recruiting him for football. he is still trying to decide where to go. after that he hopes to open up a computer science business. in oaklan
