dylan dreyer is tracking stormy weather for us. good morning. >>> good morning, lester.torm outbreak, especially into this afternoon. very high dewpoints because of moisture off the gulf of mexico. that sets up the stage when have you an approaching cold front to produce very powerful storms. and we could see within these storms, strong gusty winds and heavy downpours, frequent lightning, some hail and also some tornadoes. in orange there from parts of nebraska to western kansas, into parts of western oklahoma, that's the area where we could see our best chance of tornadoes. especially later on this evening. that would be the time frame, but elsewhere in red, we are still going to see the potential of some very strong storms. right now, the storms that we're seeing across alabama into georgia are not the ones that will see the tornadoes, although they are producing torrential downpours and gusty winds out of those systems as well. threat spreads eastward. and tornadoes, not just in the east, we could see them throughout the afternoon. something we will be tracking in kee

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer joins me now. dylan, first of all, how bad was it yesterday? >> craig, it was a very active day yesterday. the storm chasers are out to get those videos, because those are the people on the ground that can spot when that tornado is actually in the line of homes and neighborhoods, and look at all of the reports we had yesterday. 16 tornadoes. one up in illinois. several in western arkansas. and a few in northeastern oklahoma, especially just east of tulsa. we also had wind damage reports, 173 of those. today, it's part of the same, slow-moving cold front, in yellow, from michigan back over into wisconsin, stretching right down into northern texas. we will see the chance of very strong storms. now, even though we focus a lot on the tornadoes themse selves, the he severe thunderstorms produce the dangerous lightning and large hail as well as wind gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour. of course, in red, right back into oklahoma, the same region we saw yesterday, that's the biggest threat of tornadoes redeveloping later this afternoon and into this

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer leads our team coverage. dylan, what have you got? >> toure, outside of the zone, we got a tornado warning in north dakota of all places. not even anywhere near where the severe weather is expected today. but it is active all across the country. it's the area in yellow, though, from wisconsin over into michigan, right down into texas where we will see very strong thunderstorms. that means hail, large hail at that, also torrential downpours, dangerous lightning, and the possibility of wind gusts over 60 miles per hour. then, on top of that, you have the red zone down through central and eastern oklahoma where we have our biggest threat of seeing very strong tornadoes later on this afternoon and evening. we have flood warnings and flood watches up and down the mississippi and missouri rivers. that's because of all of the heavy rain we've been seeing lately. and early next week we could almost see record-breaking flooding in parts of the mississippi around the st. louis area. we have more rain falling where the flood warnings are posted,

let's get a check on your forecast with meteorologist dylan dreyer.t looks like we're going to sacrifice a beautiful friday for a soggy saturday. >> since i'm done so early, i'm okay. friday works perfectly for me. saturday i'm working any way. we're going to see a lot of rain start to spread eastward. you can see the rain around the great lakes and gulf coast states. a closer look shows you the heaviest of the rain is moving into eastern ohio where we could see stronger storms today. torrential downpours down into baton rouge and that will spread eastward through the course of morning. so we have two areas we could see large hail and also some real gusty winds too. no real tornados expected, but across texas into louisiana and mississippi, we could see some of our stronger storms over the course of the day. temperatures warm up and down the east coast. thunderstorms in washington, d.c., not really moving in until later today. then as we go into the weekend, it's looking soggy. showers up and down the east coast with some thunderstorms too. so the goo

dylan dreyer is also tracking the weather of course. >> she's down at churchill downs getting ready for today's kentucky derby. hey, dylan. >> good morning. we will have more on fashions and horses here at the kentucky derby. first things first. the weather. where the fires are occurring. the good news is things are improving especially out in california. we need that onshore flow and you can see as winds come onshore that will lower the temperature, increase the humidity. it's the total opposite of those dry, santa ana winds. we are going to see that continue through the day today and into tomorrow. so instead of being real warm, l.a. should top out in the 70s. the fog indicates that there is more moisture coming in off the ocean. that should certainly help with the fire conditions out that way. it looks like that should linger through this weekend. we'll see some improvements. of course we'll have to track rain in our area. we'll have much more on that here at the kentucky derby in just a few minutes. lester? >> all right. thanks very much. we'll turn to the latest on the investigatio

dylan dreyer is tracking the weather for us. >> d >>> today could be the start of a severe weather outbreak. the moisture streaming in off the gulf of mexico. that puts dewpoint in the low to mid 70s, unstable air combines with the energy to the west of the cold front and could spawn some very strong storms as we go through this afternoon and this evening. in orange there from nebraska, right down into oklahoma, that is the area we could see some strong tornadoes, later on this evening. elsewhere in red, we could be dealing with large hail, also some damaging wind gusts, right now, we have some very strong storms, not severe, but strong storms moving through alabama and through georgia, just south of atlanta and up across minneapolis and back into south dakota. we have heavy downpours, frequent cloud to ground lightning and potential for strong, gusty winds. that's not the severe weather we'll see today. back through parts of nebraska, into kansas, oklahoma today and then tomorrow it spreads ever so slowly to the east, and tomorrow, in fact, we are looking at the possibility of tornadoes at

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is here with that forecast. good morning, dylan. >> thanks, betty. we are going to see some heavier rain move into the east coast through the day today. we're already starting off the day with some showers. we'll get a break, see some sunshine, then more thunderstorms will redevelop as we go into this afternoon. you can see the rain is moving across the northeast, heavy in spots, especially just off the southeast coast of long island. and then we are going to see some breaks in the clouds before more showers redevelop. also heavy rain falling right down near new orleans where we could pick up a couple inches of rain through this morning. but the biggest threat for severe weather will be in to maryland, also into virginia, and the eastern carolinas where we could see some large hail, damaging winds, and even some isolated downbursts possible. so we could see some wind damage out that way and we are looking for those who form, especially late this morning, and into this afternoon. temperatures will be warm up and down the east coast, highs topping out

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is here with me. what are we seeing right now? >> right now, random run of the mill thunderstorms, that's right, for right now. but this is one of those things that will get more and more active into the evening. that's when it is most unsettled and you can see there are a lot of showers and thunderstorms, mostly across the northern plains into minnesota and parts of iowa. but it is the area of kansas and nebraska and oklahoma and trk where we will see the chance of stronger storms today. so we are going to watch out for those this afternoon. you can see we have this moisture coming in off the gulf of mexico. combine that with a cold front and unfortunately, this is a very similar set-up to what we had last week. this is tornado alley for a reason. coming off of the week we had last week, this is the last thing this area needs. a closer look shows that area in red across parts of nebraska, down into western oklahoma and into the panhandle of texas, we are looking at a very good chance, 50% chance of seeing the possibility of those

. >>> we want to bring back in dylan dreyer, our meteorologist as we continue to watch these storms inare developments becoming more ominous or are things less worrying at this moment? >> right now it is a little more ominous because that storm that is just north of oklahoma city, that has also now produced a confirmed tornado. so they have added on a tornado warning, and it is in effect until 4:30 central time. that's northwest creek county and pawnee county. that is significantly west of tulsa, but the area of concern is the fact that it's moving east at 30 miles per hour, and that is now a life-threatening situation. that's coming out of the national weather service in tulsa saying that a tornado has been spotted on the ground, and it is moving east at 30 miles per hour. that's that top after rrrow to west of tulsa. it is moving east. that's why that's an area of concern. the other storm that is south of oklahoma city, there is still a tornado warning in effect until 4:00 central time. that does not include the town of moore, oklahoma. it also does not include the town of norman, ok

meteorologist dylan dreyer is here now with the rest of the holiday weekend. good morning, dylan. >> thanks, alex. good morning. it is going to be a chilly start to the unofficial kickoff of summertime here for memorial day weekend. temperatures in the northeast starting off in the 40s and 50s. but it's only going to top out in the mid 50s later on this afternoon. in boston, it's about almost 25 degrees below normal for this time of year. and it's even very much below normal back through the great lakes as well. the warmest part of the country is right in the plains where we'll be in the 80s and almost 90 degrees today in denver. we do have a couple of rainy spots. especially in the northeast. there's this low pressure system spinning off the coastline. that is wrapping in some of the moisture. so off and on showers, sometimes heavy, but mostly just those moderate nuisance showers. and a cold rain at that across the northeast. we'll keep an eye out for some stronger storms today, especially through the northern plains. most likely across the dakotas, into parts

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer. >> yeah, we will see a lot of storms in the areas across the country. but the area we will focus in on specifically is right back into the plains, nebraska, kansas, oklahoma and panhandle of texas. can you see a closer look. storms are starting to fire up. that line straight across western and central nebraska, stretching down into northwestern kansas. more storms are firing up across central kansas as well. a lot of lightning with these storms. and we do have the threat of some tornado. those red boxes that are popping up, those are your tornado watch boxes in effect until 10:00 p.m. central time. and it's meaning that we have the perfect conditions for tornadoes to develop. we do not have any tornado warnings at this time. warnings indicate a tornado has been spotted on the radar or one has been seen on the ground. but the boxes indicate that conditions favorable. now we are going to see a huge area of just regular severe thunderstorms that could contain wind gust up to 60 miles per hour and we could and have already seen quarter-sized hail with some

let's get right back to meteorologist dylan dreyer for the latest. >> this is a slow moving system, that'se saw yesterday. we're seeing the most severe storms right now still across oklahoma, especially down into texas where we did have a tornado warning about five minutes ago in northeastern texas. that has since expired, but we do still have several tornado watches, also severe thunderstorm warnings and watches all out ahead of this cold front that again is extremely slow-moving. so we're going to we keeping an eye on these storms throughout the rest of the afternoon. now is the time of day where these storms do continue to strengthen and fire up. the dark shade in yellow is an area where we do have severe thunderstorm warnings at this time across parts of oklahoma and texas. we ecould see gusts up to 60 miles per hour, torrential downpours and quarter-sized hail. we'll keep an eye on those. >> thanks again. >>> and storm chaser reed timmer is racing into that next line of storms right now. he joins us by phone from just north of dallas. reed, tell us what do you have your eye on? what a
