we have nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer here. >> i'm not out in the snow.'s a big storm going on in d.c. >> we're going to keep you locked inside. >> it's nice to be here. nice and warm. can you believe we're talking about another snowstorm. this is the fifth time the federal offices in d.c. have been shut down this winter because of snow. that's five snowstorms. you can see the snow is still coming down very heavy. we could also see some very strong storms today down through parts of florida. first, i want to show you that the snow is still coming down. looking at a pretty nice picture of the capital there. the roads not looking so nice. it's a good thing a lot of things are shut down this morning. we are going to see a chance of some of this heavier snow move into delaware and southern new jersey. most of what we're going to get is already on the ground but it is still making a mess in some areas in parts of the nation's capital already picked up about 7 to 9 inches of snow. now this is already pretty much what we're going to see in parts of virginia, but

parts of the country are getting hit with a late winter blast and nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is oncef it. dylan, do you like these locations? are you good with it? >> i love these locations. are you kidding? >> i knew you did. >> this is fantastic. it is pretty brutal here out in chatham right now. the winds have already gusted up near about 50 miles per hour. in nantucket, winds have gusted up near 60 miles per hour. this is a massive storm. and believe it or not, the storm itself is still 150 miles out to sea. we're just getting a glancing blow from this storm system here. we're going to end up with about 7 to 10 inches of snow. but as we go through the next couple of hours, winds will get stronger, up near 70 miles per hour and there's a high tide around 9:00 a.m. this morning. we could start to see some minor coastal flooding as well. it's not a big storm for most of the country, but we are certainly seeing the effects of it eastern elbow of cape cod and around nantucket. we're hardly seeing any snow at all in boston, still windy along the coast but we're not going to see the 75

nbc meteorologist dylan dreyer is here with the forecast. isn't spring supposed to start this week?> spring does start this week. that's a good thing but there's a lot of green on the map, too. we've got heavy rain across the southeast but it's all about the snow in parts of the midwest. and we did end up with quite a few inches of snow in some areas. you can see in parts of areas like washington, d.c., the heaviest of the snow is finally starting to move out. so the worst is over but we end upped with several inches of snow. and it is still lightly snowing right now which just makes it a nuisance at this point. those lighter snow showers will continue throughout the rest of the morning. hayward, virginia. dulles with ten inches and washington reagan international airport ended up with seven inches of snow. we also had some ice in southwestern virginia and northern north carolina. so we were spared here in new york city. but in washington, d.c., that's the area that got hit hard. look what happens into friday. spring does happen this week. by friday, with the cherry blossom festival

nbc news meteorologist dylan dreyer is tracking it for us. dylan, good evening. >> good evening, lester. the ingredients are there. we have the cold air with the polar jet and the moisture with the subtropical jet but the question mark is on how these will come together. the thinking right now is rain across the southeast by monday evening. then it develops into lighter snow through the afternoon on tuesday, with potential blizzard-like conditions by tuesday night into wednesday morning across parts of especially coastal new england. now, if it hangs on to this track, we should see just light snow amounts back through parts of new jersey. a little bit more -- a couple of inches possible in new york city. but the potential for several inches of snow, including boston and parts of cape cod. but we still have to iron out these details, lester, as we go through the next day or so. but the track takes a little more easterly component to it, but a more westerly track, this could be a major storm. lester? >> dylan, thank you. >>> when "nbc nightly ne

. >>> dylan dreyer here with the forecast and it seems to be this cold and storms and snow still gripping us. >> it is. there is no relief in sight. a day or two here and there. most of the eastern half of the country will remain on the colder side. it is the west coast where we're still seeing those wintertime storms that bring rain to the coast and washington state. we also have some snow across areas north of minneapolis and also an icing situation through virginia and north carolina where black ice is issued this morning. north of minneapolis, we could end up with about 5 to 7 inches. because of that winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect. a closer look at the rain making its way on shore, washington state that will try to stretch into northwestern oregon into the portland area too. it is also producing some mountain snow and you can see across extreme portions of the cascades, we could end up with 6 to 12 inches out of this storm system and as for rain, we're looking for about an inch or two, that will accumulate over the next 48 hours as the rain is really just purr sier

. >>> dylan dreyer is here with your st. patrick's day forecast. is all that green going to be covered up with heavy coats? >> unfortunately it is. so many areas across the country are dealing with some cold, it is really just the western plains that are enjoying some temperatures above average. but we do have this big storm system bringing snow to the nation's capital and heavy rain down through florida. we also have some heavy rain and snow in the pacific northwest. but we are going to see things clear out eventually this morning. parts of washington, d.c. picked up about 7 to 9 inches of snow. we are measuring snow in feet, though, especially back through the higher elevations, back into washington state. and you can see heavier rain is making its way on shore. so we are going to see off and on showers with some pockets of heavier rain ending up with 1 to 2 inches of rainfall from seattle right down to the coast of oregon. and, again, the mountain snow will accumulate possibly as much as a foot to a foot and a half. we're looking at pretty cool

meteorologist dylan dreyer is here with that. i tell you, dylan, i was in los angeles this week. now back here in new york, i'm thinking i should have gotten off in dallas. >> it's probably one of the best places right now. you've got to go further south to deal with anything warm and not deluged in it water. we are still seeing temperatures right now in dallas at 64 degrees. but look at how brutally cold it is across the northern plains and upper midwest. temperatures today will be about 40 to 50 degrees below normal for this time of year. wind chill right now, 38 below is what it feels like in billings, montana. feels like 20 below in minneapolis. now, we do have some lighter snow showers moving through the northern plains right now. but here's that bigger storm system back through california. so the rain will continue out there. but as this next storm system moves from west to east, where exactly it lines up is going to play a huge role in how much snowfall we're going to see. by the time it makes its way to the east coast, you can see lighter snow showers just south of minnea

nbc's dylan dreyer has made her way to syracuse, new york, where it's snowy and very cold. and dylan, according to a tweet you sent out last night, it was a difficult trip to get there. >> reporter: matt, you don't even understand. it was no small feat trying to get to this winter wonderland here in syracuse. i ended up driving here from new york city, if i can get my way through this -- ended up driving from new york city. it was 50 degrees when i left. it was 7 degrees by the time i got here. and i drove through it all. heavy rain, sleet and freezing rain and then the heavy snow. and it was the heavy snow that caused some serious problems on the roadways yesterday. take a look at this 40 to 50-car pileup on the ohio turnpike yesterday. it caused about a ten-mile backup. three people were killed and an ohio state trooper is in serious condition right now. and other areas hit hard, western new york where buffalo has had its second blizzard this season. that's the first time in history. they ended up with about a foot and a half of snow. parts of vermont ended up with about t

nbc's dylan dreyer is in philadelphia. dylan, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. you know, philadelphia's only 6 inches away from having the second snowiest winter ever in what has been a record-breaking year or season for so many cities across the country. so here we are in march in the middle of yet another winter storm. and, actually, the forecast for this storm had gotten better for states further south. but either way, an unwelcome forecast in what has been a very tough winter. the calendar says march, but mother nature didn't get the memo. a west coast winter storm in the form of torrential rain and wind over the weekend. morning rain in l.a. had the oscars donning a poncho, but dried up in time for the academy awards red carpet. outside of hollywood, people in california still cleaning up the mud and the mess. and thousands in arizona left without power after a west-coast soaker. in denver, heavy snow wreaking havoc on the highways and causing a deadly 100-car pile-up. >> had to be a chain reaction of cars hitting and hitting and hitting. >> reporter: messy

. >>> first, dylan dreyer, she's going to hint at some good news about the weather. or not. dylan?ews here. spring starts thursday. that's certainly good news. some areas certainly not feeling like it, ice across virginia, north carolina. because of that, we have winter storm warnings and advisories in effect through the day today and into tonight in the northern plains and upper midwest. we are looking at the heaviest snow to the north of minneapolis. that's where we're going to see some of our higher snowfall accumulations, perhaps as much as 6 to 12 inches. in duluth, minnesota, over 100 inches of snow for this winter season. down in virginia, freezing drizzle. it makes a mess of the roadways. very, very icy this morning. keep that in mind if you are in that area and traveling. it will start to warm up through the midwest. temperatures should get into the 60s. chilly in boston, 33 degrees. 38 in minneapolis. tomorrow, we will see it warm in the south and still pretty chilly in the northeast with temperatures around 48 degrees, but actually that's much better than it has been lat
