joining me now is e.j. dionne, washington post columnist, and an msnbc contributor.eing here, e.j. >> good to be with you, reverend. >> what's the romney strategy? just say stuff that's wrong and hope it doesn't matter? >> well, you know, i think that has been for this campaign. i mean, i've been around campaigns for a long time and i honestly haven't seen somebody push beyond the edge of the truth so often and say things that are so flatly untrue. i was struck during the debate, for example, when he just sticks on this notion of president obama and economists are in broad agreement that it created something like 3 million jobs and helped the economy from collapsing. paul ryan wrote letters on behalf of a couple projects in his district and here was romney at a company that got help from stimulus money. but they can't just give it up. it's really -- i suppose it shouldn't be but i find it astonishing, still. >> to keep talking down the economy, it seems like whenever there is good economic news they give the obama team credit. the romney campaign released a statement

e.j., it's great to have you here. they entrusted it to a group with a bad record and have gotten themselves in hot water. have you seen anything like this before? >> i can't remember anything like this before. i had this thought that the republicans haven't been able to find very much voter fraud to justify all the laws so they decided to create some themselves. that's one of the sort of terrible down sides of this. if they use this as an excuse to say, we need these tough voter i.d. laws because you made the essential point. there were two broad points of view on this. one is we're so worried about fraud we're going to make it really hard for a lot of people to vote or that the whole process is supposed to make it easy for people to cast ballots. and that the worst thing they did was to destroy people's voter registration forms. but i don't remember anything like this except acorn. and i think this is where we're going to have to ask our conservative friends. they went nuts over acorn, t

it's a trust issue. >> on the economy, how does it tip the scales, david brooks and e.j. dionne, in the final nine days? >> i think this has been the worst campaign i've ever covered. i think they're both ending on the same note they started. obama is doing a negative campaign, he's got an ad out which is called "remember" which is about romney, the plutocrat, the flip-flopper on the stump. romney is trying to appeal to moderates, to women, which is a bipartisan ad which is saying -- you know, i don't care if it's a republican idea or a democratic idea, i'm going to be for that. and you know so he has shape-shifted. that's not who he is, that's not who his policies are. so i regard this as a campaign that has answered none of our fundamental issues about both of these guy, how they would govern the next four years, and they have finished as badly as they started. >> i disagree. i think the election is a fundamental choice and i think the trust issue links closely with the economic issue. romney has almost run as a product. you want air-conditioning? i'll give you air-cond
