let me ask you, e.j., how do you expect the state of the union to be different from his other state of speeches? >> well, i think this would be really deferent because let's think back. in 2009, he was dealing with an economic crisis that was handed him. in 2010, he was em battled on health care. in 2011, the democrats had just been shellacked and he had to dig out from that. this is a real opportunity for an obama strengthened by an election victory to lay out where he wants the country to duo. and i think -- and when you said in the intro, when you talked about job creation in the economy, i think it's really important that he shift the focus of washington. i think the country's focus has already shifted away from analyst budget battles and toward the job of putting people back to work and creating shared economic growth. i think we're going to hear something strong from him about that. we just got to get out of these fake, contrived crises. >> angela, when you're doing the state of the union and you know you worked the hill, you're not only talking to the people there, you're talkin

i really don't see a whole lot of hope for a compromise. >> e.j.ionne, has the republican from virginia scott rigell ended his career with republicans now that he was traveling with the president of the united states today to talk about fixing a financial problem in this country? >> i actually don't think so. i think to go back a bit to our earlier conversation, as liz suggested, there are two kinds of conservative right now. there are conservatives who say there is nothing wrong but the packaging and are really taking this hard line on the sequester, and there are conservatives saying hey, wait a minute, we got to rethink some stuff. we lost five of the last six elections. and i think people like the congressman from virginia are going to look very good come november of 2014, because this sequester is just stupid. we're taking a whole lot of money out of the economy at a moment when we should be goosing the recovery, not pulling it back. and i think a lot of republicans in their heart of hearts know that, at least republicans in the electorate, if

it's a lobby. >> e.j., i want to talk about the difference between the federal and the state levels, because this is a problem that the republican party has on a host of different issues. they'll say one thing nationally, and then the state -- the governors, the statehouses, either take the party back two steps or just complicate the issue entirely. you saw that on reproductive health, women's health issues. they would say one thing nationally as a party, and then you have these laws that are passed at the state level, whether they're transvaginal ultra sounds or amendments. they push the party back. republicans in congress actually want to see some sort of gun safety reform. they can't even really feesably speak in moderate tones without being undermined by a lot of these republican governors or statehouses that are passing legislation that puts the guns in the hands of teachers and schools. >> but it depends where they're from. erin made a really important point, i think, which is that for years and years people who advocate what i would see as saner gun laws, get a constant pushba
