e.j. dionne. e.j., turning back to the possible sanders-trump debate, if that does happen, and certainly the rnc and sean says would be great, what do you think that it hurts? does it hurt bernie sanders potentially and give hillary more support or hurt her because she would look less presidential? >> i think you got your answer when you asked sean spicer of the rnc what do you think of this debate, should they go forward, and he said, oh, sure. i mean a lot of democrats are very upset with bernie sanders about this because they see him as going in with donald trump to diminish hillary clinton. so that's the conventional view. it helps trump, it helps sanders, it hurts clinton. but i think there are risks on the other side of this. one is donald trump keeps going forward and says i'm going to do this, i'm going to do this. if he drops out now, then i think he is -- sanders certainly but also clinton will go at him and say is this a sign of weakness, is she chi-- he chickening out. but on s

we have e.j.' does that outsider argument fade away when somebody gets in the voting booth and says, boy, this is going to be the commander in chief. >> i think the on important thing is that donald trump is not truly an outsider. the more he talks about how much he knows politicians is for her politicians is to have been on the inside, like he had. she has to point out that he's not the outsider they're looking for. >> you have say trump has a strong argument that's led to wins in the rust belt. what's worked for him there? >> trade, tad, trade, and deindustrialization. that's his whole card. if he could win those rust belt states, he could win the election. his problem is, on matt's point, the country may say, we're on the wrong track. but barack obama's numbers have gone over 50%, as he said, last night. and if barack obama is doing that well in november, it will be hard for trump toed a vaps th -- advance that argument. whatever he picks up in voters concerned about trade, he'll lose with the m

e.j. dionne wrote a powerful piece saying don't mainstream this, what donald trump is doing.ou heard mack earlier saying this is beyond unacceptable and it's something that shouldn't be tolerated. how should we think about this as journalists covering this, is this just a horse race and whether trump is doing well or do we have some responsibility to round this out and talk about it in what may appear to be more idealogical terms? >> well, i think that what we have done so far, media is so fractured, what we have tried to do at the "washington post" is try to assess what it is he's saying and present the things he's saying which are untrue and which are incendiary as being untrue and incendiary. it's tricky. it is hard to say to a large group of people that i mean, he's gotten ten million votes. there are ten million people that agree with him and it is very tricky to have a conversation with them in which you make value judgments about what it is that they're doing. so what it is that we do is try and say this is not true. he's repeatedly said these things that are not true.
