in el paso, here in eagle pass. we just spoke with the mayor of eagle pass for a short while.he was in a meeting with federal officials earlier tonight. he was told, there could be anywhere from 50 to 60,000 migrants crossing into southern mexico, the question is where exactly are those migrants going to disperse? how are they going to break up? are they going to be traveling, how long would it take them to get to northern mexico and the border here. depending on who you talk to, there's some people who think this is going to slow down a little bit. there is also many local officials who will tell, you they are concerned that this is a sign of a more sustained problem, and perhaps the end of that calm that we have seen since the end of title 42 back in may. >> to be clear, add 50 or 60,000 crossing into southern mexico, all the way at the other end of the country. the issue is, do they make it all the way through mexico t o the united states? >> yes, it's very difficult to protect. remember, you're talking about people who are traveling to gather, or trying to create group saf

that is the big question right now in eagle pass. i want to show you this just behind me here the situation with migrants has gotten so bad, they've created this makeshift processing center under one of the main bridges here, one of the main arteries connecting mexico to eagle pass it appears they've separated the migrants, at least for now. there seems to be families on one side you can see some of them getting into border patrol vans right there. and then on the other side, it looks to be a large amount of males that have come in without families and/or without their wives and have arrived here i had a chance to speak with the sheriff of eagle pass, who used to be a border patrol agent he says in all his years in law enforcement and working this border, he has never seen a problem this bad so, i had a chance to speak to a few of the migrants and i asked them, what happened with this week why are so many migrants coming to the united states this week? they told me they have no idea. one pointed to the sky, saying the weather was bet

they are beginning in eagle pass. long lines of migrants wading through the water coming into the united states when that border patrol wasn't around. they find holes where the texas national guard doesn't have razor wire and then they enter into the united states. again these are predominantly single adult men. most of them from what we're seeing from venezuela. some are coming with venezuelan flags they are wearing. drone video from yesterday when we had the mass illegal crossing you were referencing. more than 3,000 people. this is perspective from the mexican side of the river when that mass crossing first began. what you'll notice is there was 0 resistance whatsoever on the mexican side of the river. even though the mexican army and police were over there, they were not stopping any of these mass crossings. harris, you mentioned off the top. governor abbott is pointing the finger at the federal government. look at this video he posted yesterday to his twitter feed accusing the federal government of border patrol

crowds of migrants under a bridge in eagle pass, texas. alone. let's get right to the scene with cnn's ed lavandera who is live for us from eagle pass. tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: hey, manu. well, here in eagle pass just on the other side of this wire that has been set up by state authorities here in eagle pass, you can see a large group of migrants. and they have been waiting down there in the water. they have crossed over. and they have been sitting there and waiting there for hours and hours trying to figure out how to turn themselves in to federal border authorities. they can't make it through the wire there. this extends for several miles along the banks of the rio grande here in eagle pass. this really kind of captures the tension that is unfolding here in this city where we have seen 3,000 migrants, according to local authorities, that arrived here yesterday, 2,700 the day before. we've already seen hundreds and hundreds more arriving making their way around and turning themselves into authorities here. it's all in a ve

what you are looking at is the remnant of the mass illegal crossing that took place in eagle pass this morning. images tell the story best, get right to the images. we can pull up the drone video from earlier this morning when the mass crossing first started happening. take a look, a line of people stretching as far as the eye can see, crossing illegally from mexico into eagle pass, and we were talking with these migrants as they were crossing illegally, predominantly venezuelan, and sandra mentioned, a lot of them told us they arrived in northern mexico on a train this morning and then decided to cross over illegally in one massive group. most of them are single adult men. we have seen some families coming, but this was an enormous group of several thousand migrants crossing all at the same time. we'll show you some video we shot from the ground as well as the migrants were streaming into the country. nonchalant, they are waving at the camera, and chanting venezuela, venezuela. thousands arriving via train. we'll show you what the trains look like. we were airing this yesterday, a tra

cnn's ed lavandera joins us now live from eagle pass, texas.appen before. why the surge now? >> reporter: well, that's the question that many people are trying to figure out. i can tell you in our reporting throughout the course of the day in speaking with the migrants who we witnessed cross over, hundreds and hundreds at a time today, many of them tell us, and many of the ones that were crossing here in venezuela, the vast majority of them were from venezuela. so those are people who've been -- and they told us they've been waiting on the mexican side of the border for several months in many cases as they tried to go through what is known as the cbp-1 app. and basically, this is an application process that allows migrants to set up an appointment to present their asylum case. many of these migrants have been telling us they've been waiting months and months to get through. and a sense of desperation is setting in. that's why you're seeing these massive numbers in part showing up on the american side of the river, creating a great deal of heada

and last week a 10-year-old drowned in eagle pass. if you look at the cover of the "new york post," it describes it all anarchy. >> steve: it absolutely is. so, as you were looking at those images, and it was kind of a flashback to about two years ago. remember, under that bridge in del rio, texas, well, now this is a bridge in eagle pass. they are estimating 4,000 venezuelan largely migrants there. and that is why eagle pass has declared a state of emergency. something like over 10,000 people, about half of the population there have come across the border in the last week or two. like 3,000 on wednesday. 2500 on monday. 7200 the previous week. and there's only one migrant shelter in the town, it's called the mission border help. people are out the door and around the corner because they don't have enough resources to help the people who have come. and so once the, you know, the border patrol starts to process them, they got to hang around a little while because the processing takes a day or two. >> ainsley: the processing facility th

cnn's ed lavandera is in eagle pass and is joining us now. what is the latest there today?e, the scenes here in eagle pass dramatically different from what we saw 24 hours ago. this area of the rio grande on the edge of eagle pass has been the area where we've seen thousands of people crossing in the last few days, but this morning really dramatically different. we've been able to see across the rio grande here, a much heavier presence on that side this morning of mexican law enforcement, state police, perhaps local police and definitely mexican military vehicles that have been going up and down that area where so many migrants have been staging. there's been a handful of people crossing this morning. in fact, you can see out there on the island in the middle of the river there's a group of three migrants that have come by. you will notice that two are wearing life jackets. there was a group of texas state law enforcement on an air boat that went over to that little island moments ago before we came on air and threw those two life jackets to two of those migrants so that th
