thank cryou, everybody >> treasury secretary steven mnuchin, let's get reaction from eamon javers, eamon, as he was pressed a little bit on whether these new sanctions on north korea do, in fact, put more pressure on china, even after the president today emphasized china stepping up to the plate with some actions of its own today. >> reporter: yeah, that's absolutely right saw the treasury secretary there walking a bit of a diplomatic tightrope both full of praise for the chinese and their cooperation with the united states as the president was earlier today, then also announcing these new sanctions which could have severe impact on chinese banks, if they're sanctioned and designated by the united states. they could be removed effectively from the global financial system so that is a little bit of a carrot and a pretty big stick there used by the treasury secretary. as he was speaking we got some wires from the china's foreign minister who's been speaking just about at the same time, and china's foreign minister just said that they're urging the north koreans not to go further along in a

eamon, i said they discovered this last year. why did it take so long for them to disclose this hack? >> reporter: we've been asking the sec exactly that all day, bill, that's the obvious question here. if you knew about it last year, why is it just coming to light today? the sec has not responded to us at all. they do say, however, that ultimately the vulnerability here was in part of the edgar system, which is where companies file documents for public disclosure. it's the part of the system that allo that on a temporary basis, tee those documents up for disclosure tomorrow or the next day. that was the weakness here, the sec disclosed that much, but they're not saying why it took as much as a full year to give these details out to the public. >> have they said what they do about it, if anything? >> reporter: they have said they patched that particular flaw, and they've said they have launched an internal investigation into what happened here. but ultimately, we're left with a lot of big questions, including who done it, right?

eamon, what's your take on this story in general, but also factoring in what jon and pete just broughts? >> when you look at what jon and pete were just detailing and walking us through that, it is an absolute red flag it's extremely interesting and it's the kind of thing that investigators will want to take a very, very close look at but we should note that it's not definitive that is, there can always be some sort of innocent explanation to this. someone could have gotten spectacularly lucky, one of the executives could haved a a death in the family and needed to sell investigators will have to figure this out. in this day and age, there's usually instant messaging traffic, e-mail traffic, phone calls, documents, a whole lot of things investigators can look at to get to the bottom of that >> ultimately, you're dealing with a conversation in the u.s. economy more broadly, where we see these massive data breaches, time and time again. to me the question is, why are companies allowing this to happen why are they so bad at playing defense? ultimately, you have to look at the economic inc

eamon has the details. >> that's right.he treasury department just announcing a few moments ago new sanctions against 11 entities in iranian-related trading. they're saying here that they have targeted supporters of iran's islamic revolutionary guard corps and networks for cyber attacks being designated here -- that's the treasury speak for being sanctioned -- are 11 entities and individuals for engaging in what they call support of designated iranian actors or malicious cyber-enabled activity i won't read you all of the names of these entities that are being designated but one of them in this release from treasury is interesting going back to those ddos attacks, the cyber attacks against financial institutions in 2012 and 2013 that a lot of our viewers may remember they're naming here the individual and company they're saying that were involved in creating the iranian botnet. they were responsible for managing a botnet which was used to target 24 corporations in the u.s. financial sector during those ddos attacks in 2012 a

a eamon javers joins us from washington with the latest. >> reporter: the president and treasury secretaryg at the u.n. seemed to signal new cooperation with china in terms of cracking down on north korean financial transactions with chinese banks. they said that was an encouraging sign they also unveiled new sanctions via an executive order by the president of the united states here's has we know about what the sanctions will do, and their intentions the president saying that they target the sources of funding to north korea. they expand sanctions to individuals and companies who finance or trade significantly with north korea and identify new industries that treasury can target with sanctions. they go sector by sector and list which industries can be affected they said the chinese central bank had sent a message to chinese banks telling them they need to comply with the new u.n. sanctions blocking north korean final transactions if that's held up that could be a significant piece of cooperation between washington and beijing that we have not really seen before in this north korean puzzle
