eamon javers is joining us with more eamon, you and your team were working on this project for monthsaded back to russia. when did you guys figure out something was happening and something was going on here? >> dom, this was a fascinating project to work on for nearly a year the whole time we were working on the story, we know the young oligarch at the center of the story was potentially part of any trade deal that might happen for evan gershkovich and other me americans. you see putin there. the united states' gershkovich there behind the flowers with putin. freed him as part of the prisoner swap. it happens just by coincidence, the final fact checks of week before the prisoner swap happened, which happened in the utmost secrecy i went to check the federal inmate register data base which lists the inmates in the u.s. prisons to detail the checks the entry came up blank, dom that's when we realized he was no longer in the custody of the u.s. bureau of prisons just days before the prisoner swap was announced. we knew something was happening. you see the pictures from our documentary. w

eamon, please take us through what economic populism is through the lens of both the democr democrats the republicans. >> it's something we're seeing on both sides. speaking of which, take a live look at our camera in philadelphia where senator j.d. vance, the republican vice presidential nominee is talking to an audience there trying to rally support in the crucial state of pennsylvania. we've seen economic populist proposals from both sides during the course of this campaign, particularly from j.d. vance who himself has embraced a right-wing populism on the economic side that we haven't seen before in the republican party. we've also seen it here at the democratic party, as well. kamala harris basically cokopyi cop copying a no-trump plan. that's the big similarity we're seeing is that both parties converge on the populism economically. the big difference, though, dom, between the two parties. take a look here at the list of the prominent democrats that will be speaking at this convention this week. this is a party with a new face with kamala harris at the top of the ticket, hillary

eamon javers has the details.earning more about the policies of the democratic nominee and vice president, kamala harris. >> yeah, that's right. one of the big questions has been with kamala harris' economic agenda, how is she going to pay for all this? we're learning details. a spokesperson telling nbc news one of the ways she's going to pay for her proposals is by raising corporate taxes. she's now endorsing a hike in the corporate tax rate to 28%. that is nbc news reports, her first major proposal to raise revenues and finance the expense chb plans she wants to pursue as president. that's not necessarily a surprise, skautd, because that puts her scquarely in line with where joe biden has been. no daylight between the presidential nominee and the existing president of the united states on the democratic side, but it is something of a reversal for corporate america, which has been enjoying 21% corporate rates since the trump tax cuts, and of course, president trump has said he would keep those in place and perhap

let's bring in ben eamons. great to have you with us. we talked about the carry trade in the past.is upon us. and i'm wondering, how can investors tell, how can you tell, if we're near the end of that process? >> yeah, it's difficult, mel, you know, because you're looking at that cftc data, and that's just part of the market. we have a foreign exchange market that is so large with its fx forwards, there's some data on the imf side on that, and that actually showed more like a $4 trillion estimated position, and that's barely changed. so, from the last time that we spoke about it, but also just the last sort of weeks, and the futures data indicates that, too, if you look at the last few days, the open interest in these contracts for yen futures is barely shifting. as much as we have movement in the japanese yen, it may not be really, you know, major short coverings yet, just not to the extent that you get real calamity. nonetheless, a vix today at 65 is clearly a financial distress moment. caused mostly by the yen. i think that's the interlinkage. so, my sense is, there's more to go
