eamon javers is here with the very latest. eamon? >> hey, melissa.s of challenging hacks, but we're learning more about the group that carried them out tonight. which cyber researchers have named scattered spider. a unit of google calls this one of the most prevalent and aggressive actors affecting organizations in the united states today. its members are likely, they say, less experienced and younger that many established hacker gangs. many of its members are native english speakers, which makes them believe they may be low kated in the uk or europe. and they find that they cause outages in several ways, which don't necessarily involve the deployment of standard ransom ware. of course, knowing all that doesn't do much to mgm and caesars. the two see nor mouse companies who have been hit by these attacks. mgm disclosed its attack wednesday and caesars did the same thing earlier today. now, cnbc reported earlier that caesars has paid out a ransom worth $15 million to the group behind the attacks. the group has demanded a similar payout from mgm, and l

ja eamon javers is here with more on the story. >> reporter: frank, this is the tech trial of the century. another one maybe on the horizon. we have not seen a heavyweight antitrust battle since the department of justice took on microsoft in the struggle with government and industry back in the late 1990s. the trial will be months long and full of technical testimony. at the core is a set of simple, but competing arguments. u.s. department of justice will argue google built the market share on violating the law. spending billions of dollars a year to become the default search engine and squashing competition. lawyers for google will argue the company built dominance by building a better product. customers and business partners chose on their own. the government is defining the competition too narrowly. google will argue it does and just compete with bing and duck duck go, but competing against any place people are searching for information. amazon search for products or twitter and now x search for news items. the two sides are bringing enormous assets to bear with the doj bringing assets

eamon javers is on the scene. >> the department of justice has just called its first witness and it'soogle's chief economist. they've been grilling him this hour about the advice that he gave to the company on antitrust issues. what's fascinating is we're hearing direct echoes of the legendary microsoft antitrust case of the late 1990s. the department of justice has been grilling him about warnings he sent in e-mail as far back at 20 years ago. he warned executives against using incendiary rhetoric in public saying phrases like quote, cutting off their air supply shouldn't be used to refer to their competitors. that's because microsoft's steve balmer allegedly used the same phrase and it came back to haunt microsoft in their battle back in the 1990s. so you have google executives 20 years ago analyzing how the doj prosecuted the microsoft case back then and now the case here surfacing that advice in its case about google. the doj, state attorneys general and google have concluded their opening statements so we're getting into the heart of the case. on the first floor of the courthouse
