like this rare winter storm warnings do continue above 1000 feet in elevation, north bay and east bay hills, south bay mountains remain in these through 11:00am. this morning. we're also under freeze warnings and frost advisories through 09:00am this morning with temperatures falling really, really low. now we are warming up along the bay shore for it to be consistently rainy. if you are seeing any sort of frozen precipitation, it's mostly hail or sleet that you're seeing in these areas. that's for san jose mountain hayward at 39 degrees. freeman. 38 livermore. you're in a really chilly 36 cloverdale. we saw the snow overnight. 33 degrees right now up towards mendocino and lake counties. it is solid snowfall up there traveling between lake mendocino counties down into napa and sonoma counties. really, really rough. go as we're seeing a lot of snow packed roads up there this morning. winds not as consistently windy as we had been seeing 15 to 20 miles per hour. gusts from the 30's and 40's this morning to the 40's to just barely low 50's this afternoon. it's a cold day through and through, b

the blows the east bay hills as well as the north bay mountains. multiple inches of snowfall are expected in these areas as we move through the overnight hours and a chance of some flurries, even if they don't stick lower in elevation as low as 500 feet in elevation for some spots. now, freezing temperatures were still in the midst of frost advisories and freeze warnings through 09:00am this morning. temperatures falling as cold as the upper 20's snowfall totals as we work our way into the evening tonight, you can see those deeper shades of blue down there around mount hamilton. that's well over a foot if not closer to 2 feet of snowfall piling up overnight, santa cruz mountains as well as the north bay mountains, east bay hills. and even a chance of some flurries right there around twin peaks about davidson in san francisco itself. now as far as future casco spotty showers will continue through the day today. really picking up activity into the evening tonight, though, this is 07:00pm, much more widespread rainfall. and you see those areas of yell

above oakland, a little bit of flurry activity falling for those of you at the very crest of the east bay hills as well out there above bolinas pay up in marin county. now winter storm warnings taking effect today at 04:00pm for the south bay mountains, the east bay hills in the north bay hills. snow level right now is hovering right around 1000 feet, if not just below it. we'll see snow level tomorrow morning falling even further. we do have freeze warnings and some frost advisories in effect for another few minutes. up until 09:00am this morning and snow tonight will be falling at lower elevations yet some of the north bay mountains seeing multiple inches of it. and for mount hamilton, likely upwards of a foot if not a couple of feet. now rainfall will be spotty throughout the day today. mixed with snow followed upper elevations increasing overnight tonight. some really heavy rainfall during overnight hours mix with snowfall. increasingly low elevations into tomorrow morning could see a few flurries on top of mountain peaks like a twin peaks in san francisco. rainfall estimates for the rest o

getting the brunt of it with some moderate rain there and even some snow showers throughout the east bay hills, including mount hamilton. so we're going to be under winter weather advisories starting by tomorrow morning, not just for north bay mountains, but east bay hills. that's going to continue through tuesday. so we are tracking this atmospheric river tapping into a plume of subtropical moisture. going to give us widespread rain. so right now we're going to start to see that drying trend. still seeing those showers out there in the south bay. but for the rest of the bay area, we're already drying out. that's going to continue throughout tonight. but the bulk of that river first going to ride for those of you in the north bay by monday morning. this is going to have a negative impact on your morning commute. so plan ahead and drive safely could see thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds throughout your monday morning commute with some scattered showers by monday afternoon with the 3rd round of rain arriving tuesday through wednesday. so we could see anywhere from about 3 quarters of an inch o

some pretty low elevations of the east bay hills down into the diablo is in the santa cruz mountains on the peninsula. so we've got a lot going on out there. these are effect from 07:00pm tonight through 11:00am on friday. that's tomorrow. now as well as these frost advisories and freeze warnings that are also in effect through 09:00am this morning. temperatures cold out there. a lot of us dropping into the 30's and 40's enough of us dropping below freezing that we are seeing some snowfall going to be watching really closely this morning, petaluma santa rosa in cloverdale ground. maybe a little bit too warm for snow to stick in those spots. but you may see a few flurries at points now as far as future cast of wind gusts go, we are seeing winds still pushing into the bay area but a whole lot calmer than they were yesterday, which is certainly a bit of good news yesterday as winds were whipping all across the region. and now we're seeing things calming down in that regard, not coming down as far as rain and snow goes, though, that just picks up this afternoon into the evening tonight.

nonetheless, with our highest peaks in the east bay hills and even santa lucia mountains getting upwards of about 20 inches of rain or snow or less. and for us here in the bay area, rain totals with monday's storm already going up to an inch from sunday into monday. by wednesday, though, that some are going to see anywhere from half an inch to an inch and a half of rain. when it is all said and done double those amounts for our highest peaks. so let's take a look at temperatures today because even though we saw a few rays of sunshine, we really didn't warm up all that much. we were still about 5 to 15 degrees below average, especially those of you in livermore. only warming up to 48 degrees. so 15 degrees below normal there when we should be in the low to mid 60's this time of year. certainly not feeling like it, but we are tracking though, a fairly dry calm night out there. so if you are heading out this weekend, make sure to enjoy your saturday night because it is going to be the driest part of your night because by sunday we are going to notice the return of those rain showers, wind t

so, that means, we have actually got some of the east bay hills, the highest elevations, we are all thinking this is more like the potential for east bay hills like along skyline boulevard. anything that is 1000 feet or above could get a light dusting, could be major regulations, and it will certainly be a talker, and will catch people's attention. a lot more snow on mt. hamilton and the santa cruz mountains of the potential for more impact in this scenario, where we have more infrastructure, roads, and communities that are much higher above that 1000 foot level. santa cruz mountains might have a bigger impact and of course the northbay mountains have always been a place to get snow but the focus of the system what's to put more from santa cruz mountains south. more snow in the sierra but for holiday travel concerns over there, does not start until tuesday afternoon. and then, it will really go. we look more at the sierra and snow story coming up in the next half hour, we will spent more time on just how unique this system is, and what it took for the atmosphere to be able to give us these u

we saw flurries in the east bay hills overnight but it is mostly what. lena howland is live conditions. lena: good morning and happy friday. the good news in the east bay's we are not seeing active snow. however, the rain is continuing to fall down on us as all around me. it was a different story in oakland hills hours ago. i want to show you video just into the newsroom taken just hours ago in oakland hills. you can see the fluffy falling near tilden park and grizzly peak boulevard. they suck quite a bit of snow with the road nearly impassable with folks for regular tires. onto video from yesterday morning and patty took this video first thing yesterday morning. >> my husband was not awake yet and i was like, it's snowing! people say that there are no seasons in california, there are. [laughter] it is not like the midwest. it is unusual but hey, it is fun and different. lena: according to the national weather service, yesterday's snowfall was light compared to what was expected. they said originally the east bay hills could get two to six inches of snow

if you look at a map closely, you can see these light shades of blue through the east bay hills, that is like skyline boulevard, which is at this level. skyline boulevard, those hills on the east bay go to 1500 feet. snow level gets down to 1000 feet by thursday and friday. there will be light snow there but it should not be major, impactful, it will be more of a talker, something that people want to get pictures of rather than having a big impact on people who live in the east bay hills. in the santa cruz mountains, you can see the splotches of orange down there? start thinking about thursday and friday. anything above 1000 feet to 1500 feet in the santa cruz mountains could have more impact. that might be a bigger issue, especially in the driveway there and the higher elevations. we start up tomorrow in the lower and middle 40s, tomorrow the daytime highs we hit those numbers by about noon. if you still haven't noticed anything by noon but by afternoon you will. three days of rain for thursday, friday, and saturday, better chance on thursday and friday. that is our first alert today

but it's the east bay hills. i know the map is a difficult one to make a detail like that. which is the very top of the east bay hills. as we get into thursday and this doesn't look like a significant storm up there. other than being interesting and a talker and cool to look at. that should be about it. there shouldn't be a lot. in the sierra, it's going to start snowing tuesday afternoon. travel home on monday if you're expecting someone to come back monday should be fine by a weather standpoint. then it will just get messier from there. watch the snow keep going as we take a look at the sierra all the way through next week. we're going to get about another two feet of snow there. it's good. good for the snow packt. pack. the north bay valleys are always the coldest. that's everybody else on thursday. we should be in the mid-30s. in the seven-day forecast you can see the chance of rain for wednesday, thursday and friday. but it's the cold and the wind. the little wind icon right there. might be the most impactful thing to start us off on wednesday. back to you. >> marking 8

that's going to be the same for east bay hills and even eastern santa clara hills as well. those are actually going to go into effect 10:00am monday through 4 o'clock tuesday afternoon. so we have to winter weather advisories to report on. and as you can see, it's already starting to snow in eastern santa clara hills. so we're starting to get that rain and snow mixture. so certainly going to wake up to a winter wonderland there by monday. morning radar for though, tracking our second stronger storm out in the pacific. you can tell by that well defined, comma, shape out there just off the coast of portland. that one is going to bring a severe weather. so it is a cold or core storm. pop-up thunderstorms with the threat of thunder and lightning going to be an issue in addition to gusty winds and possible hail. if any severe weather does form. so those of you in the north bay by 8, 9 o'clock monday morning, you're going to see the bulk of that wet weather as that storm track shifts to the south and east by midmorning, 10 o'clock. we're going to notice that each storm track shif

now look at the east bay hills. light shades of blue. this is from most likely, from wednesday night late to about friday morning that this will happen. and it wouldn't be big accumulations, but the snow level in that window of time gets down to about 1000 feet, you could get a light dusting of snow on some of the higher ridge tops there through the east bay hills. that would get a lot of attention, people would be talking about it but it would not have a huge impact like snow in the santa cruz mountains. you can see where you get some oranges and yellows on here. on some of those higher elevations on the draw through the santa cruz mountains, we get snow that could accumulate to a couple of inches, maybe, if this comes together. that takes us from thursday into friday morning, that window. so, we will be watching this very closely. we will be fine-tuning and refining the forecast on this as we get closer to it. there are other things to talk about, though, in terms of what is coming our way. snow in the sierra, obviously, this is from t

around more snow falling in the santa cruz mountains and around matt hamilton, but also in the east bay hillshe diablo range, snow levels dropping down to the point, you'll see snow levels that usually we don't around the bay area. then we will be tapering off into mid and late morning on friday. how much snow are we talking about? in the santa cruz mountains, the potential for a few inches to fall. with computers say is falling will not necessarily land on the ground. contacted down by additional flakes landing on top of it, but a couple of inches of snow a commissioner possible in the highest east bay hills. a few inches of snow on top of mt. diablo and with heavier amounts further north into northern sonoma and napa counties and hefty commissions on top of that for much of inland mendocino county and lake county. most of us in the lower elevations, below 1000 feet, which is where the bulk of the bay area's population lives will see 1 to 1 1/2 inches of total rainfall. this should make a difference in terms of long-term drought conditions but it will be a cold and and pleasant rain that fal

green is indicating rainfall up and down the peninsula across the east bay east bay hills, especially mount hamilton. you're looking at over a foot of snowfall. already santa cruz mountains that rain snow mix and snow is causing lots of travel woes. which rain has keeping us updated on and for the north bay. it is been snowfall. you head further north on 101. in the further north you get well, the more like the middle of winter. it looks by the time you get up to cloverdale that snow is piling up. rain snow mix between there in santa rosa, though, is making for some really wet and icy conditions. i-80 is also seeing some wintry mix between the late show up to vacaville. the late show up to vacaville. that is transition mostly to had some snow earlier there and also seeing a little bit of that mix on highway. 24 earlier this morning that you're crossing between concord in oakland, it's rainfall there now. and you're also looking at rain along the snow. great, a spot that also had a mix of both rain and snow earlier this morning. so so active out there it does continue for much of the r

and now we have a winter storm watch in effect for our hills around the bay area from the santa cruz mountains, over toward the eastls and then for the north bay as well, a step up above that is a winter storm warning. we're seeing that for lake and mendocino counties, where snow totals may be much higher over the next couple of days. areas in blue, we're looking at 1 to 3 inches of snow. something that made everybody stop and be, like, what, it's even national news, there's a blizzard warning for parts of l.a. county, ventura county, as well as santa barbara county. this is where we could see the possibility of feet of snow over the next few days, between now and saturday there may be up to 7 feet of snow. i mean, we're just waiting to see what actually happens. we're already seeing snow on mount hamilton right now, as well as parts of the east bay hills. we can see that really coming down and we'll be tracking that with stormranger as it continues to accumulate. elsewhere it's pretty dry and the sky is clear. we're looking at estimated snowfall totals about 1 to 3 inches, and including the santa cruz mountains. m

even higher amounts around the edges of the bay area, maybe some accumulation around the east bay hillsvel on california 24 through the caldecott tunnel, there will be a layer of flakes on the ground, but higher amounts through the north bay mountains as well. so all the highways through the higher elevations, you want to avoid those. for most of the bay area, anywhere from a half inch to over an inch of rain. a lot of that aimed at the southern end of the bay area , just where the second round of moisture will be aimed on friday night into early saturday. it will also be called. temperatures tonight dropping down into the 30s areawide. even downtown san francisco dipping down into the upper 30s for low temperatures. you want to get your dogs out for a walk tomorrow, pickle and lilac won't have a lot of sunshine to bask in tomorrow, but still, where the pups out tomorrow. it will still be cold and breezy. temperatures will not warm up very much. only upper 40s to around 50 degrees for highs thursday afternoon. our temperatures don't warm up very much through the entirety of the seven-da
