one of the things i picked up in your book is there is a huge difference between the east coast and westoast. i am from the midwest, you left out the rest of the country. what is the difference between east and west? alexandra: the biggest difference is in the status system. on the east coast, it is vertical, a hierarchy. you pay your dues and get to the next level, traditionally peaking. on the west coast, it is more horizontal. to get in with the group are these networks, and so you sort of laterally move into a certain network. that does not really matter how old you are, you could be old or young or anything, you just have to be sort of connected and have the same status values in a way. for example, in the book, a lot of these kids who went out to try to be the gods of silicon valley, like elon musk or peter thiel, would copy their idiosyncrasies instead of their brilliance, because that was much harder. they would take on interests in living forever or becoming paleo or the seasteading institute, the libertarian colonies in the ocean. it was sort of by interest that people grouped
