and of course, commerce is one of the major shipping channels in the whole east coast. now, initial reports from the coast guard indicates that a harbor pilot than assistant were on board. and these are pilots who are specially trained. >> they live >> in baltimore to nick nab the gate, the shipping channel, and they are the best of the best they've been. they've been around for many years. now, the coast guard said the pilot reported power issues multiple alarms, and loss of propulsion prior to the incident and according to the national transportation safety board, and they're going to be investigating this. the eastbound lanes of the bridge were shut down due to minor maintenance filling potholes and the west bound lanes were opened to traffic now as soon as the call came in, police were notified and began clearing the bridge. and that did save some lives rough numbers are that 8.9 victims were involved but potentially upwards of 14. and we're really concerned that they those people are no longer with us. yeah. >> please are using which is set yeah. >> but we still hav

as seven people missing and there were some people on the bridge when it went down about 1:30, east coastime. and carl, i want to give you a sense of the scale of disaster that's happened here at the port of baltimore you can see over my left shoulder, in this direction, the actual bridge itself the highway overpass just jutting up in the sky and the bridge is gone from the hour hie horizon. normally that is visible from miles around you can see the ship, the "dali" packed with containers, port to stern -- bow to stern, i should say on the surface of that vessel about seven cargo containers high just packed. all of that mass moving out of the port of baltimore and impacting the francis scott key bridge earlier this morning, crashing into the cement and steel of that bridge, and bringing the entire span down in what appears to be a period of seconds. so, for authorities now, a real mystery as to what happened here overnight. why this disaster occurred who has been occurred, potentially killed in this disaster and then, of course, the cleanup, how they can get that bridge out of the water.

so anyone driving through this area also, if you're going up and down on the east coast, say driving anywhere between washington, philadelphia in new york city. you may find yourself on this road. it's one of three interstates that cut through baltimore. it's the critical one that is a bridge. this is where hazmat trucks drive because the other two are tunnels 895.95 that run underneath if the harbor and the city of baltimore, respectively. so this is a critical root for truck traffic in an incredibly heavily traffic part of what what's sort of broadly referred to as the i95 corridor here along the east coast of the united states, the bridge carries 11 million people every year or cars, i should say 11 million cars traffic this bridge every year. it's called the francis scott key bridge. in no small part because it crosses within 100 yards of the place where francis scott key wrote the star spangled banner. of course, the national anthem we have a tweet this morning from the secretary of transportation, pete buddha, judge, who says they are offering federal resources to the response
