coast but still bringing danger this weekend to east coast beaches. rip tide and high-surf alerts are posted from florida to maine. millions warned to stay out of the water. cbs' dave malkoff is in pageant parish, bermuda, and leads us off tonight. dave, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, adriana. wow, what a wild night we had as this hurricane made direct landfall on the island. it was hard for us to sleep through it, but our night was nothing compared to the night of these fishermen in the worst part of the storm. the crew of the pescador lost an engine but saved themselves, chaining their boat to a pair of cruise ship anchors in the harbor, all during hurricane ernesto's worst winds. >> 100-mile-anhour gusts i'm guessing. still holding strong. >> reporter: the storm knocked out power to 70% of bermuda and stripped trees of their branches, but many vacationers had already left the tiny and wealthy island. if you look at that piece of coral down there, you can see how the 30-foot waves are just crashing on that. there used to be a beach here. w

the east coast through the rest of the weekend, we will see the east coast of the united states stille higher and is going to the seven feet waves, that will be a little harder to find. but even still, not great for the beach, not great for boating. those rip currents, we have seen the red flag warnings up for a couple of days. we have seen beaches be close across parts of new york, and this is a scenario that's going to stick with us here at least through the end of the weekend. the system is well off to our east, but of course, with a large system like that it is not hard to turn up some of the water. we know the water swells that can be generated from systems like this. this will be something that even as it works to the north, ernesto will still be dealing with this up and down the east coast for the next couple of days, at least. hopefully will see some improvements for those indirect impacts for the east coast as we get into early next week. >> yeah, the last watch out for, if you going to the beach, that's for sure. rip currents at all, quite frightening. let's go now to nbc's

in addition to pretty much everywhere up and down the east coast of the u.s. essentially from portions of florida up through portions of maine, you have that high rip current risk for today in a lot of these areas, as well as high surf and that high surf is going to push all of that water inland. you also have here along the coast of new jersey and delaware, some coastal flooding alerts as it pushes that water and it could cause some erosion and some of those areas now, those flooding alerts not to be confused with these flooding words in this is from a cold friend that's going giving some pretty heavy rain to areas of pennsylvania, new york, new jersey, and maryland, talking one to three inches, some areas could even get higher than that, that same cold front is going to bring the potential for severe thunderstorms so places like charleston, morehead city, virginia beach, the same place we're talking about rip currents also have the potential for some damaging winds and strong thunderstorms alright, immigration is a hot topic issue. >> this election season. s

hurricane ernesto now posing a threat to the east coast this weekend as it moves towards the east coast, it will create 40 foot high waves in the atlantic sending rough seas to the coast and dangerous rip currents. experts are asking people to be wary of those rip currents which the national weather service says has already claimed the lives of 29 people this year. kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow has been tracking ernesto. you were talking about how this is going affect the east coast, laura? yeah, it's going to be a big problem, especially bermuda. right now. you get middle of the atlantic. >> and ernesto just twirling right above bermuda as we speak. and so we've been watching this. the forecast track almost dead on with the storm. unfortunately, you can see the eye just about to make its way across bermuda. and so they're really in the full impact of the storm being battered by hurricane force winds right now. a very large storm surge. we could be talking about 3, maybe 7 foot storm surge along south facing beaches there right now. a lot of damage to be had as it move
