pope travels here in new york today, taken from lower manhattan and ground zero all the way up to east harlem, he addressed the world's most powerful and will meet with the poor and the children and a big central park parade, right now the pontiff is at the memorial in lower manhattan, this is billed as an inter religious event for peace, many finals are represented here and the holy father is meeting with family members of victims of the 9/11 attack. he gave a short address a short time ago, saying they suffer a pain that leaves us speechless. he urged the world leader to adopt new global goals to fight poverty and protect the environment. he says the future demands action now. >> translator: we cannot permit ourselves to postpone certain ajends afor the future, it demands of us critical and global decisions in the face of worldwide conflicts that have excluded those in need. >> reporter: now the pope will take a rest this afternoon and he will likely need it, it's a packed schedule today and then goes to a school and a catholic charity up in east harlem, that is where he seems the most happ

let's go to marcus solis in east harlem, our lady queen of angels school where they are preparing for the pontiff to come by. marcus? >> marcus, can you hear us. >> reporter: ken, we are on third avenue. they are lining up for hours even though it will be over three hours until the pope's motorcade comes by. we will see -- we can see people lined up with flags. they are also waving flags, signs, they are very excited. they have been here for hours bit of time until the pope comes here. as we mentioned throughout, the pope has a busy schedule. if there is a highlight, it might be this appearance at our lady queen of angel's school. it is something that he requested specifically, to meet with young children at a catholic school, an inner city school with immigrant children attending. there are children, 24, two dozen selected from four schools throughout harlem representative group. they will be in there singing the peace prayer of saint they will present little projects they worked on of issues relating to what pope francis has been speaking about, environment, service to others. they

visit our lady queen of angels school in east harlem. at 5:00 tonight, 10,000 ticketed guests will be in central park for the pope's motorcade. then tonight it ends with mass at madison square garden. there are closures around msg, penn station will remain open for commuters. that is some good news. still expect delays. in the meantime, the pope will cover 54 miles on the ground before he leaves new york heading back to rome and the vatican. today he will cover a lot of that ground. in all, his trip to new york will be minutes, just shy of 40 hours. we have three reports, live reports to bring you on the pope's arrival in new york and his busy day ahead. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live on the upper east side. kala rama is live in central park. we start with n.j. burkett outside the u.n. >> reporter: pope francis is expected at the u.n. in over two hours. he will became the fourth pope to take the world stage but francis will boldly go where no pope has gone before. the year was 1965, pope paul the 6th becomes the first vatica

then later in the afternoon, he will visit an east harlem school. then in the evening, yes, a very busy day, he will celebrate mass for 20,000 people at madison square gardens. that is where our john henry smith is this morning. let's talk specifics, john henry. talk about security. how's it looking out there so far? >> well, just to give you an example about how determined local officials are to make sure that the pope remains safe, reports are that police commissioner william bratton performed a final security check hips before the pope's arrival. local law enforcement has pulled out all of the stops. they've erected some 37 miles are barricades around the city, many of them are being used to shut down more than 10 miles of new york city streets. the city says that's the greatest number of street closers in new york city history. it's not just the streets that have been walled off, many sidewalks in mid town have been made impassable, as well. of course you mentioned madison square gardens. we're at t minus 11 hours away from the pope taking the s
