in june 1967, there were no settlers in east jerusalem. areoday, roughly there 200,000 fewer in east jerusalem. and 600,000 just in the west bank. 1977, do remember, by there were only 5000 jewish settlers in the west bank. there were 50000 and east jerusalem. 55,000 in the territories occupied in 1967. with the ascension, the expansion of the settlement movement beyond east jerusalem which was the labour party's planning. this was done by the labour party primarily. after 1977, the labour party and its associates expanded the settlement enterprise radically, even more radically. that the israeli settler population decreased almost 12 fold in the west bank outside of east jerusalem. i've mentioned that in addition to that -- there is no easy way to do this, but the darker colored areas in the east part of jerusalem are jewish settlements that were built after 1967. the lighter colored are palestinian neighborhoods that have been surrounded by these hilltop fortresses known as settlements. that if one examines this massive transformational

john huddy has the latest from our middle east bureau in jerusalem. john?: well, gregg, the fires there at this point are largely under control, but security officials say they appear to have been started by arson, and that's one of the big headlines here. before i get to that, let me walk you through and give you what we call the nuts and bolts of what's been happening. at this point the 70,000 residents that were evacuated from their homes in israel's third largest city north of tel aviv have been allowed home, unfortunately, to burned-out apartments and some burned-out buildings. again, with the exceptions of some flare-ups and hot spots, those fires are largely under control. about a half a dozen other fires, however, are burning in israel. in particular, the jerusalem mountains which are in the distance behind me. some small villages, according to officials, have been evacuated, and the estimate now is that about 2,000 acres have burned. i know it doesn't sound like a lot compared to the fires that, wildfires that burn in the western part of the u.s.,

we have the very latest from a middle east bureau in jerusalem. >> reporter: of the four americans killedo were u.s. service members, two u.s. contractors working in afghanistan. 16 other americans were injured. all part of a larger group of people that were getting ready for a post-veterans day run. the attack happened around 5:30 this morning inside the air base when officials say a man apparently posing as an afghan laborer detonated his suicide vest. the taliban has claimed responsibility saying the attack had been planned for four months. where the explosives came from is they were smuggled into the base if they were already there. why this attacker wasn't flagged before getting in is under investigation. it is the largest u.s. military base in afghanistan. it is where top u.s. officials including the defense secretary and the president fly into because of its heavy security. this is clearly a major security breach. secretary of defense ash carter released a statement saying, quote, for those who carried out this attack, my message is simple. we will not be deterred in our mission to
