authorities asked people who live beyond the roadblock behind me on san philippe road to leave their homes in the east foothills of san joseu can see this fire did continue to burn throughout the night. calfire tells us it's a 40-acre fire and it's still at 40% to 50% containment. when it started yesterday afternoon, firefighters were worried it could grow to 500 acres because the terrain is so rugged and there is a lot of fuel to burn. this winter's heavy rain storms produced a lot of grass and the recent heat dried it out, leaving the hillsides extremely flammable. that's why you saw calfire's response yesterday afternoon. more than 150 firefighters on the ground. plus four planes, two helicopters dropping water and flame retardant from the air. as for the cause of the fire, calfire is investigating a convertible car, about two miles up the road. the car was abandoned and burned on the side of san philippe road. what's not clear is was the car in some sort of accident, was it stolen and intentionally set on fire or did something else happen to it. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you v

san jose. a vegetation fire is in the hills east of san jose. you can see all that smoke pluming into the sky. the fire started around the top of the hour and quickly grew in size. we had live pictures moments ago from skyfox. we are told that the fire is now on metcalfe and san felipe roads. taking a look on google maps you can see there are a couple of homes, some seemingly abandoned, but others seem to be residential there. so definitely some concern for the homes in that area. still working to get information on how bad this fire is, obviously what the cause is, but again this fire is burning now in the hills east of san jose. we have a reporter on the way. of course, skyfox is also en route. we have pictures there as well. so we are continuing to monitor the situation there. once we have more information we will bring it to you live. >>> well, a big rig fire is slowing things down on interstate 680 in fremont due to lane closures, but those lanes should reopen by 6:00 tonight. the big rig was carrying frozen cheese and caught fire on the of

we look at our high temperatures today, looking at our high in morgan hill, up to 93 degrees, east san jose, 92, san jose will be up to 88 degrees. and for the east bay, hitting triple digits in a few spots. i think this will become a little bit more common as we head towards the weekend. hayward, high of 85 degrees and 80 in smooth, em bark dare row, 67 degrees and mid-90s for nova toe. as we look in palo alto, things are looking busy. temperatures in the upper 80s within the next few hours. and we are normally at 77 degrees this time of year. so we're going well above that and it looks to stay that way as we go into the weekend. you may want to head somewhere cooler like the beach board walk, temperatures in the low 70s today. and then we'll start to see the clouds rolling in later tonight. now one thing, heads up about as we look at what's happening out in the pacific, we have two tropical systems, and hurricane hillary. over the next few days, these two hurricanes will do what we call a effect. and it will rotate around each other and be absorbed into one hurricane. this will create som
