the way, out west there's a storm track, you can see the snow from wisconsin and through eastern sections of colorado. this goes back through utah and southern california. record high pressure from canada, and this storm system all helping to funnel in strong santa ana winds. they were expecting 60 to 80 mile-per-hour winds across the l.a. basin and it has fire warnings because of that dry air that gets pushed down from the mountains and problems to prevail. by the way, i mention that because that eventually will shift east in a weakened form and help to generate a new storm pattern next week. the storm pattern itself stays locked in the central and southern plains, texas gets beneficial rains. we stay dry saturday into sunday. today, if you're going to the lighting. mount washington monument it will slip back to the 40s and upper 30s by daybreak. we say tonight but it's really a daybreak temperature. the extended outlook, low to mid-50s, dry weather for the start of the weekend. our sunday, dry, near 60. cleveland may get wet for the ravens game. that same system brings us rain late monday, tuesday,

northeast of new mexico, western kansas, eastern colorado, many of those interstates or at least stateases, northern parts of new mexico and ten inches in kenton, oklahoma. when you get the winds blowing over 40 miles per hour and up to 72 in some spots in new mexico, that will create whiteout conditions and that's where you get your blizzard and that's what we have still going on in oklahoma and western kansas and dropped in colorado now and new mexico this thing starts to pull out and still treacherous conditions across these states. who is next on the docket? well, it's stretching out and getting into some mild air. places like chicago, st. louis, you don't have to worry too much about seeing wintry precipitation. all on the back side of this thing. maybe a little snow or sleet mixing in at times from chicago over towards pittsburgh where some of this moisture is beginning to stretch eastward. into the mild air. so, the storm track stays west of the coastline. that's the key in this type of scenario that keeps the temperatures above the freezing mark in places like chicago and in pl

northeastern new mexico, northern texas, the panhandle of oklahoma and getting into kansas and even eastern parts of coloradoain. by the way, some severe thunderstorms. a lot of energy with this, so once it taps into the moisture from the gulf of mexico, the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms from dallas to houston later on this afternoon and tonight does exist. it begins to lose a little of its punch as it heads towards st. louis. more scattered rain showers and the snow stays pretty far to the north. dallas will be a problem spot because of the thunderstorms in the afternoon. some wind in d.c. and new york but rebounding temperatures after a cold weekend. the coldest air of the season so far, but temperatures today expected to get to 47 degrees in new york city and 61 degrees in atlanta. even 42 degrees in chicago. the storm track, like it's been for the past couple of weeks really, has been from the southwest up through the western great lakes and pretty much staying north and west of some of the major metropolitan areas on the east coast and that's expected to be the case at least through thur

eastern new mexico near the texas border. authorities believe heavy snow and high winds are to blame. the storm is also being blamed for two deaths in colorado when a van lost control on an icy highway with snow and wind that obscured the western landscape, the southwest snowstorm made its way east to kansas. in garden city to the west, the storm slammed the heartland's highways, affecting cars, suvs and tractor-trailers alike, all left stranded along the road. the blizzard started monday in new mexico, forcing the closure of multiple inner state around the town of ratone. >> they told us it's whiteout conditions. >> more than 50 miles of i-25 were closed north from tan sa faye to colorado. >> even if they get past any of our checkpoints, they can't see. visibility is so poor that it makes it impossible to pass through that area. >> reporter: the pre-christmas winter blast whipped through parts of texas and oklahoma where forecasters say up to 16 inches could fall on the panhandle by tend of the day, bringing with it up to 35-mile-per-hour winds. authorities say at least 100 texas motorists have been rescued. >> they have to go real, real sl
