meteorologist dylan dryer has more from the ground in eastern kentucky. >> reporter: scenes of destruction in kentucky a house slamming into a bridge as torrential rains and high winds battered the eastern part of the state. at least 60 homes damaged or destroyed by flash floods which struck at random. >> you're looking at 500 homes within the communities that are affected. you may find one home that's been completely demolished with the structure next to it completely fine. >> reporter: the water roared through a mobile home park pretty much wiping out everything. >> it was all the way to the front porch. i had a chance to get my animals and go out the door, and by the time i got back to town everything was gone. >> reporter: officials said emergency workers were going door to door today looking for people who might still be trapped. almost 20,000 were still without power. the rising waters swept away cars one vehicle hanging precariously over a creek, while others were partially submerged. the storms also hit hard in neighboring indiana. fallen trees, blocked roads and damaged property m

even though tom smith was not a native of that county, he was from eastern kentucky. it just happened to be that place where he was convicted and sentenced. more importantly, the county itself had a general civic reputation for violence leading back to just after the civil war. even though he was not a native of the county, his execution was looked at as a sort of -- some sources think of it as if it was a sort of blood sacrifice for the good, the morality, of the community that was killing him. i found it somewhat accidentally. >> how did you go about your research? what kinds of documents did you find, where did you find them? bob hutton: i found them in criminal court records. perhaps like two dozen newspapers, mostly in kentucky but as far away as missouri that reported on his death. >> were these newspapers on microfiche? what state were they in? bob hutton: most were but some have been put in digital form, which is very handy. >> have these resources been used by other historians? were there new discoveries you made along the way? bob hutton: i don't believe any

satellite and radar, we have this counter clockwise swirl across eastern kentucky an upper level low that will drift east over the next few days, i mean drift. it is moving by a snail's pace, by wednesday it will position around here, a cold front approaches from from the northwest. the cold front bumps the low out to sea. the two being as close as they are to the delaware valley by wednesday afternoon with the air as soupy as it's expected to be these features will activate showers and thunderstorms. a couple of them could be on the strong side. it's very innocent looking small system, but with the humidity always high as it's going to be, that will do the trick. it will be enough to get the showers and thunderstorms flaring up. for today, high pressure is in control. knocking yesterday's system out to sea. the return flow comes in out of the south southwest dewpoints in the 70s from the carolinas to the delaware valley. future tracker 6 nothing going on. tomorrow morning everything okay. increase in clouds, higher humidity levels, showers and thunderstorms, possible. some of them c

emotions are running high in eastern kentucky where severe flash flooding has killed at least three people this week. >> one man braved that storm to try and save his neighbors and police are still out looking for him now nbc's hannah morto has an update on the search for this hero. >> reporter: as the rubble is overturned and the debris is scoured stories of bravery emerge from the devastation. >> he saved people and just a here foe for us all. >> reporter: melissa blankenship is talking about her cousin. >> he stopped because the water was high and he tried help. >> reporter: scott faced the danger and ran to rescue family from this trailer. >> the water went from my dad's ankles all the way up to here within two-minute time and scott pulled my dad over and saved him from the water. >> reporter: she says he pulled a woman from the water and went to his grandmother's home. >> he went into the house, the trailer got swept off. and him and my grandma were in it and a little boy. >> reporter: the trio were stuck in the water, but scott got the 11-year-old boy onto a drifting porch. >> thankf

. >>> one person is feared dead, several are unaccounted for after severe flash floods in eastern kentucky the area is getting more rain today. causing more fears about more flooding. it's so bad in one place that a house was swept away by the flood waters. police say 500 homes and 1200 people are feeling the effects of the storms. in the last 24 hours police say they have conducted at least 50 rescues in these areas. >> no bail for the son of a boston police captain accused accused of planning a terror attack. a federal judge called him a risk to the community. they charged him with felony possession of firearms. fbi stink ended with his arrest on the fourth of july. prosecutors say he planned to set off pressure cooker bombs at an under identified university among other things he wanted to do. fbi says the day before his arrest he bought a pressure cooker similar to those use in the 2013 boston marathon bombings. investigators say his estranged father alerted authorities after hearing his son talking about wanting to join the um lamb mick state. >> it's a terrible tragedy for the family.
