especially here in eastern mass.will not have light. in some cases, they won't have heat either. this is life threatening cold. hard to believe this is a few snow showers across the midwest a couple days ago. look at what it has become. >> tonight the northeast corridor. hunkering down with snow and wind steadily increasing. >> crazy. >> reporter: 50 million americans right now in the path of this massive blizzard that could bring up to three feet of snow in 36 hours. winds up to 75 miles per hour and widespread power outages potentially dangerous in near freezing temperatures. and the ripple effect thousands of people stranded around the country. governors from seven states declaring states of emergency. many making the same plea. >> extreme snowfall hurricane force winds. >> it should not be taken lightly. >> travel ban for the entire state. >> please remain home and off the roads. will stay home from school tomorrow. state offices are closed. roads are shut down tonight for everyone exempt emergency vehicles. this

eastern mass providence. the roading of the state, we talked about it in new york city roads being closed for 12 hours or whatever. we're talking about three or four days. interstates closed. complete downtown boston shut down. big hockey tournament being played in the boston garden the old sports arena while this was happening. by the time they let out of the first blizzard there was nowhere for people to go. 200 people were trapped in the boston garden for three days. ate hot dogs slept in the locker rooms. >> who were the politicians at that time and how were they viewed? this seems like, i mean what could you do to prepare for that? >> the mayor of the city of boston at the time kevin white, was in a tropical place. he could not get back to the city. he was out of the city. meanwhile -- >> tropical place. >> he didn't have bloomberg money. it was bad timing. unprepared. the other one was mikial dukakis, governor of massachusetts at the time. think about the climate in 1978. no cable television. no interne

all of connecticut, rhode island, eastern mass and coastal maine.e still have that heavy band of snow. we're still getting areas two to three inches. another thing, the storm's dynamics may not have been quite as impressive as advertised. i didn't hear a lot of reports of thunder snow. there wasn't wide spread reports of lightning and the thunder where you get the three to four inches in a hurry. the area of greatest concern right now -- and this is where i thought the heavy band was going to set up right through this area the lull new london back to boston. you can see where that darker blue is. that's where a band is set up. it hasn't been moving. extends down towards the twin forks. that area has the best chance to get the two feet of snow. by the time we're all said and done we could get four-foot snowdrifts. here's the wind gust map. again, what is now over providence newport, boston providence flew the islands, expected to be towards central long island in connecticut, also took the greatest winds and shifted them to the east too. it's still a

central pennsylvania getting a half foot of snow, eastern mass. over 7 inches. new britain, connecticut, eight muches, and several spots in new jersey getting 9 inches of snow. on the road, at least three dozen vehicles spinning out on massachusetts roadways. tractor trailer jack knifing, another overturning. down south it was severe weather doing damage. near englewood, florida. a tornado obliterating this camper. luckily no one was inside. up and down the east coast, hundreds of flights canceled because of rough weather. there's been very will snow this year in the northeast. >> yeah, finally! >> reporter: also delayed because of the storm, s.a.t. tests at over 100 centers across the east coast. >> it's actually kind of nerve-racking. puts the whole college search on hold. it's such a big deal. >> reporter: hopeful college students have extra time to study. >> it's stressful because your future it on the line. >> reporter: fortunately this is a fairly quick-mover and temperatures just above the freezing mark. places like central park is mostly slush right now.

areas of eastern mass a new leader shrewsberry, 29 inches. first area likely to go above 30". now getting to the point of two and a half feet. still have a shot of someone getting close to 36", that magical three foot snowfall. waiting for worcester to update and new york city was about 8 inches in central park 11 at laguardia airport. the storm itself is due east of cape cod. it is starting to move away from the region. we will start to see the clouds thinning during the day today through the mid-atlantic region may see the sun at times in philadelphia, d.c. maybe late today in new york city area. as the storm begins to pull away, that's when winds begin to lighten, too. high tied cycle late this afternoon won't be as bad. a lot of areas typically prone to those storm surges. did get hit hard. you can see the radar. there's been light snow through the mid-atlantic and continues over jersey. not causing problems on the roads. one band continues over eastern connecticut. probably heaviest snow you've seen through hartford through central long island. the main band notice the co

the winds are starting to howl in eastern mass. here's my snowfall forecast. if i'm going to do anything, this two to three foot band of blue, i may start to inch it closer to new york city and hartford. that's where the band will be from midnight until 8:00 a.m. in the morning. new york city a foot and a half. boston two feet. hartford almost two feet. philadelphia a foot. if i was to make any tweaks it may be up in hartford and new york. this storm paralyzing on tuesday, ed. wednesday is snow removal. power crews won't get out there until thursday. picture what that's going to be like with these families for three days in their homes with now power and they can't get out of their front door. >> it is a dire situation. when the power goes out and the temperatures fall it is a very dangerous situation. stay in communication with neighbors and loved ones. in forecasting this one thing about these alberta clippers is they are unpredictable. as the storm develops, it can get worse as time goes on in a very unpredictable fashion, can't it? >> they can sometimes go

it's an eastern mass. 30 providence town. that's where winds are the strongest, power outages could happen. a word to the wise. if you're in blizzard areas, what i tell i don't to do about now, turn the heat up in your house. maybe normally you set it 70, 68 degrees. crank it up. get that house nice and toasty. if power goes out in the middle of the night, it will buy you extra time and warmth in your house. obviously hopefully you have batteries, extra firewood if you have a fireplace and test the generator before it gets too bad. last thing you want to do is get the generator to work in the middle of the blizzard. i don't think i'm going to change this much. that ban looks to set up in this blue. that's two to three feet of snow from portland boston worcester, definitely worcester hills, northern providence and areas in eastern connecticut. that includes the eastern half of long island. some will get over three feet of snow. the highest total may even approach 40 inches by the time this is done. big cities a foot and a half

right now that what we're facing is this storm that is still going through new england, through eastern mass and rhode island heavy bands of snow one to two inches per hour. it goes through 8:00 tonight. it extends longer until tomorrow morning for parts of maine. this storm is still very much going. i have to say the concerning things something we're all seeing along the east coast is this cold air. windchills are very cold. they are below zero through much of new england right now. here in new york it feels like it's in the teens. we are locked in this cold along the northeast. this arctic air is going to keep pouring in. this is something we're going to see for the next several days into the weekend, it will only get colder. that is certainly something we have to keep in mind especially for where we have power outages along much of the cape plymouth most of those folks are without power. that is going to be a problem as we head into the evening with these bitter cold temperatures. >> last hour we were talking about some of the apologies that have been offered. and we actually pulled this

by the way, because the snow in many parts of eastern mass is falling as hard as when the storm began, they're having trouble keeping up with it on the streets as it is now. a travel ban is still in effect for the majority of the state. the heaviest snowfall is in framingham massachusetts, where 30 inches was reported. the island of nantucket is without power after 78 mile an hour wind gusts battered the island. over 7,000 flights have been cancelled. travel bans have been lifted in new york, new jersey, and connecticut. overall the storm spared new york city. new york city's mass transit system is slowly restoring service and traffic is rolling through the city. long island seems to have been hit the hardest with 28 inches of snow being reported. things may be picking up in new york city after missing the brunt of the storm, but massachusetts and maine are still being hit hard. for more let's go now to nbc news correspondent john yang who appears to be right in the eye of the storm. what's the latest there tonight? >> reporter: 18 inches so far and counting. the blizzard warning rema

[ inaudible ] >> not aware of any yet and hoping that continues to be the case. we are dealing with sort of a power outage on nantucket that we've been scrambling to fix and people are working their way through. do you want to say a word or two about that one? >> rhode island is still in the thick of the storm. the total snowfall in some areas could climb above 2 feet before this blizzard moves past rhode island. the governor joins me by phone. governor thank you very much for being with us. what is the state of the conditions in your rhode island? >> thank you, andrea we're still in the thick of the storm as you say. we're expected another 6 to 8 inches of snow between now and 4:00 this afternoon. i was just out on the plow and the visibility is terrible. we still have 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. i have a travel ban in effect and we're going to keep that in effect through the afternoon. >> in terms of the travel ban, you're keeping that

especially the south shore and western mass -- eastern mass rather to pick up over 2 feet of snow is definitely possible. nantucket, 4.5. this hasn't been updated too recently recently. i wouldn't be surprised if it's pushed up to the 5 mark. hurricane-force wind in nantucket. we clocked a wind at 22:22 we tracked the wind at 72 miles per hour. >> 72? >> 74 and it's hurricane-force. you only need for blizzard conditions winds over 35. that's significantly higher. that's very dangerous winds. so they have come down a little bit. but we're going to keep seeing those gusts come up through the evening. here's a look at the visibility. this is a huge problem as visibility is less than a mile from boston extends all the way down to new york. you can see where the heavy bands of snow are moving through. philadelphia and d.c., by the way, in the past couple of hours, their visibility has dropped as well. so this is a good thing to point out. because even when we're not looking at those blockbuster snow zones, that doesn't mean we're not looking at dangerous conditions. still if you're in phi

and there are areas around eastern mass at this point that you would probably describe as being in ahite-out type condition. for those parts of massachusetts, we would like people who have been terrific today to continue to cooperate with respect to the travel ban and to let our emergency personnel continue to do the work that they've been doing. we've also been in touch with many of the hospitals in and around massachusetts. we've had conference calls with them and direct conversations. their workers have been able as a result of the travel ban to get in and out of their institutions, which has obviously been important as well. the drifting continues to be an issue, the blowing, there are drifts now as high as four, five, six feet in many places. and we would urge now that we've been at this for over 12 hours, the people who can and have the opportunity and the ability to look in on their neighbors, that they do so, especially those who are living alone. the two final things i would say, if you have transportation questions, you can always call 511 and people will be there to answer

flooding in cape cod and the power will be knocked out from long island and cape cod and eastern portions of mass. this is my snowfall forecast. i updated this this morning. we had many different opinions obviously with big, huge storm like this. the national weather service in new york city was at one point saying 24 to 36 inches. they have come down a little bit now. and so they're right around the foot and a half to two feet in new york city like i am. i think that worcester area to providence has the best chance of seeing two feet of snow. as we go throughout tuesday morning especially that's where we have the best chance of getting thunder snow. literally thunderstorms. you will hear claps of thunder in the sky. maybe some flashes of lightning. that's when we'll see the highest snowfall rates out there. late tonight into this time tomorrow. hartford, i have you at 16 to 20. philadelphia to baltimore, the snow really tapers off the further you head back to the east and the south. that's why i have you lower. but there's big bust potential in areas. my confidence in the philadelphia and new yo

eastern part of massachusetts, rhode island all the way up into maine. we have very impressive snow totals so far, and we're not done. so already feet of snow are coming down in framingham massinches boston mass 36 which would put it at the top five of all-time snowstorms. connecticut has been hit hard looking at 26 inches. this is still going. we still have blizzard warnings from providence that go up to maine. these will expire through providence and boston by about 10:00. tomorrow morning is when we will see the blizzard warning expire for bangor. we still have several hours to go of snow bands coming through and drifting and blowing snow and possible whiteout conditions. we've been seeing the worst conditions along cape cod. we're still seeing heavy bands coming in and pushing in through providence and new bedford area and the eastern part of massachusetts. that's where some of the heaviest snow bands had been earlier this evening. this will all start to wind down overnight. it will turn to light snow showers and really shuts off by the time we're looking at the morning commute tomorrow. >>> so what happened with the forecast for areas near new york? why was it so off? >
