iraqi forces are continuing a slow but difficult advance through the neighborhoods of eastern mosul.very day, they are taking new ground, but then they're having to fight to clear and hold it. and it seems they're paying a price. iraqi officials won't reveal the casualty figures while the operation is still under way. but the reports we're hearing from inside the city and surrounding hospitals indicate the casualties are high. the waves of suicide car bombs. the narrowing streets, the commitment of the isis fighters resisting themselves fiercely, are all making progress slow but difficult. west of the city in the region between mosul and the syrian border, that's where paramilitary groups are working to clear ground. but also cut isis off from that territory below syria. the paramilitary groups are working to surround the city of tal afar. we're told these paramilitary groups are now getting ready to move into the city of tal afar. this is potentially a real concern. the population of tal afar is around 50,000. all of the sunni muslims, paramilitary groups are predom nents predominan

iraqi special forces moved into two more neighborhoods in eastern mosul after taking control of a districtalled the -- in northeastern mosul yesterday. the fight started overnight thursday into friday morning by yesterday evening they had full control of that area. it's been a tough fight as isis continues to launch suicide attacks on iraqi troops. we've been seeing that along with sniper and mortar fire as well. one of the biggest challenges and concerns is about protecting the civilian population. while we've seen thousands of people escaping the war zone in the combat areas, thousands more, we know, remain trapped in areas where fighting is heaviest, in particular in eastern mosul along the eastern front with isis militants using people as human shields. that has been the case in other major battles. ramadi, the fight for ramadi comes to mind as well. another problem, according to iraqi military commanders, is isis militants blending in with the civilian population. basically either trying to escape, hide, or acting assist scouts and spotters for suicide attacks for mortar fire and rpg

special forces met heavy resistance in eastern mosul yesterday as the battle in some cases moves fromthousands of iraqis have been forced from their homes just before the onset of winter. aid organizations provide supplies and food best they can under the circumstances. lucy kafanov is there for us. what are you seeing? we know you returned from one of the refugee camps. set the scene for us there. >> reporter: we were in the area about 12 miles east of mosul and let me set the scene for you. hundreds of people clogging the roads trying to register their families. it gets very hot in the daytime. freezing at night. a cloud of dust that clings to absolutely everything. these folks fled with literally nothing but clothes on their backs in some cases. food, shelter, water, just about anything. aid agencies had time to prepare and i've covered quite a few refugee camps and conditions are quite good but relatively speaking and you have to keep in mind, these folks survived nearly two years under brutal isis rule. they described torture, executions, we spoke to a bunch of women this morning

there is fighting between iraqis and the militants in ten different cities in eastern mosul.mbs were destroyed as they headed to the soldiers. militants were killed as well. the people we have been speaking to for the last couple of days say iraqi soldiers are good, but isis is insane. if the terrorists are not playing by any kind of rules, we're told, it is hard to game them. the u.n. saying 70 civilians were killed this week for treachery. more mass graves were found the last couple of days. as the fight gets harder, the civilians get wrapped around terrorists using them as human shields. air strikes are being called in, but they're not useful now in this intense urban warfare, neither are some of the big iraqi tanks they're trying to use in at least one neighborhood. the bottom line is soldiers often are going right up against the jihadis. finally, in this area, arthel, we are seeing the flow of refugees accelerating. another massive camp is being built just about ten miles from where we are. over 50,000 have fled the fighting. some say 800,000 will come out before it is a
