yesterday's deadly shooting of a policewoman south of paris, he and a female accomplice took hostages earlier today at a grocery store in the easternt city. these two different sieges sort of happening simultaneously. different parts of paris. police shot him. they killed him and freed many of the hostages but some according to president of france and one of our correspondents covering this it sounds like that number is four. four hostages did die. the female suspect managed to slip away as these hostages were fleeing the scene. she is still on the run at this hour. a local lawmaker said the kouachi brothers told police by phone they wanted to die as martyrs. they said they had a connection to yemen. let me bring in robert mcfaden, byron sage and cnn's deborah feyerick. deborah feyerick let me begin with you. there are so many tentacles of this story, if you will. you have what's happening on the ground with different sieges and manhunt in france but then you have what we're learning more about leaders, radicalization process and one individual we now have surveillance pictures. tie this together for me. >> that's right. right now

hostages being rescued and released from that kosher super market in a connection of paris in eastern paris near that connection. right now joining me from paris, a foreign correspondent for the daily beast. chris, you lived there for so many years. let's talk about the reactions with the french. the french are so adverse to the kinds of nsa surveillance and security requirements, but this is turning into their 9/11. perhaps not on the scale, but it is so unusual to have this kind of terror attack in paris. now the second incident and the third incident. it does seem as though this is going to transform what the prime minister said. we are at war. >> the severity of this attack is a surprise to people. this is a long history of terrorism taking place in france. i think anybody who is middle aged will remember the bombing in the 1980s and they will remember the st. michelle station being blown up in 95. there have been a lot of incidents over the years. if you look around paris, they have the flimsy bags as public trash cans so you can't put bombs in them. people used to. there is all of tha

now, when this thing breaks out in paris, in the eastern part of paris, as we approach 3:24 in the afternoon france time does it take authorities a bit to kind of reorganization refocus and go into this new area? as we see the map there? does that buy time for these people to organize differently or maybe have some type in place? >> well we know time usually decreased stress and anxiety in a hostage situation. that's what authorities would like to do. gign is fully capable of managing two hostage situations. but let's look at the next factor that's coming in. it's in the afternoon. it's going into evening. it's going to start getting dark soon. we're going to need artificial light to light up the area. does that play into the hands of the hostage taker? does it play into the hands of the government because they have a night vision capability? all these decisions are going to be looked at as minute by minute, hour by hour. the government is trying to decide how they can resolve it. but realize it's also in the hands of the hostage takers. if they start shooting right now when there's no reaso

it began around midday with a report of gunfire at a kosher market in eastern paris, and hostages taken. police confirm the gunman amedy coulibaly, was an associate of the kouachi brothers. they also say he killed a policewoman in a paris suburb yesterday. coulibaly himself spoke by phone today with a french journalist. [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> reporter: we only coordinated at the start, he said. when they started charlie hebdo, i started with police. as security forces tried to negotiate a peaceful end, many shops in the historically jewish district across town closed their doors early. all of paris was extremely tense today. police and citizens on edge. there was a report of a shooter in the subway, false it turned out. near the supermarket standoff testy cops evacuated streets. and this. we just happened upon this scene driving down this road a few hundred meters from the site of the hostage-taking. and everywhere we look, police are out with guns. they're crouched over this vehicle. a reported bank robbery, another false alarm. everybody seems on edge. what is it like l

the man who is assumed to be holding the five women and children hostage in the grocery store in eastern paris. he came out of prison two months ago being convicted for attempting to spring a convicted terrorist out of french prison. this main was convicted of a 1995 attack on the paris train network that killed eight people and injured 117. he served time for that and came out recently. we have heard this story from young muslim guys who have been in the prison system that he was radicalized in the prison system. the french haven't been able to get a hand on what happens to the guys in the french prison system. we know he has had contact with the other brothers who are also in a hostage situation to the north. the other thing i can tell you is this guy had a criminal record almost as long as your arm. from the time he was a minor he had drug offenses and has been known to the authorities for quite some time. what we know about the other woman who came out of nowhere he is on the loose in paris. she is 26 years old and his girlfriend and she is known to the authorities here in paris and the an

month amedy coulibaly used automatic rifles and other guns to take hostages at a kosher market in eastern paris. four hostages were killed before police stormed the building and shot coulibaly dead. reports say the man arrested in belgium is a known arms smuggler and is believed to have given coulibaly weapons in exchange for a car. reports also say the arms dealer had been in contact with coulibaly for months before the attack. a search of the dealer's home turned up documents detailing transactions with coulibaly. and the reports say the car exchanged for the weapons was registered in the name of hayat boumeddiene. the woman was believed to have been coulibaly's partner and has been on the run since the attack. >>> a non-governmental organization dedicated to fighting poverty says the wealthiest 1% could own more than the rest of the world's population by next year. oxfam international released the report on monday and called for action to stop inequality from growing. researchers say the richest 1% have seen their share of global wealth increase from 44% in 2009 to 48% in 2014. they say it w
