that storm left more than $71 billion in damage along the eastern seaboard. in the days just following sandy this iconic boardwalk in seaside heights represented so many communities splintered by the storm. in many ways it continues to be a symbol. there's debris, there's damage that dots the entire east coast right now. there are communities struggling and communities that had been struggling for 12 full months right now. a lot of people, dozens of families in this area, thousands across the region still living in trailers, makeshift trailers of shells what used to be their homes. a lot complaining of government red tape when it comes to funding or fighting their insurance companies and many beginning to wonder how long they can hang on. it's a fight that will continue. we do know yesterday the government approved a new $5 million to when the recovery here. >>> jay gray in seaside heights. >>> turning to texas now where abortion clinics facing closure will be open today after federal court struck down key parts of a tough new law. many estimated the new rule

as we progress through the midweek, it looks like it will be moving parallel to the eastern seaboards, and that waves will be picked up as much as 3 meters high. already the gusts are pretty strong at 108 kilometers per hour. looks like it will be maintaining its intensity, so due to the storm surge, the high waves and the rain that will be pounding the eastern seaboards, low-lying areas especially will see a high chance of flooding. we see another system which could be the one we talked about, but looks like we don't know the predicted path yet. these are very unpredictable. but if it does come through our way, it will be pounding these areas including konto and tokyo metropolitan areas the next couple days with huge amounts of rain. now to northeastern china. we have another system that is bringing moderate rain to beijing which is kind of good news for the area where we're seeing serious air pollution. here across europe, we have messy conditions in the balkans. it looks like it will be persisting over the next couple days. severe weather includes thunderstorms, gusts and even hail

the good news is that this is very sparsely populated, right along the eastern seaboard of luzon, where most of the population there is just north of the metro manila area, the capital of the philippines and also in manila itself. the many threat is this heavy rainfall. but don't be surprised if you see the sustained tropical storm strength waves and possibly typhoon strength winds as this does track off there just north of your location, if you're watching from manila, and then moving out there toward the south china sea. but like i said, flooding and landslides a major risk. actually, the philippine meteorological agency has posted warnings across much of luzon, a warning on that, 200 millimeters likely with this storm system. extending out into the end of the week and early next week, eastern sea boards of vietnam, keep an eye on this. it could continue to intensify as it tracks off to the west. the other of our storm systems, and also actually more intense is cyclone phailin. one thing i want to show you is on the satellite picture, look how massive this cloud shield is. about half

high wind and flooding from hurricane sandy created massive destruction on america's eastern seaboard. hardest hit was new york's staten island. 23 people were stilled there. we traveled to staten island to check on the progress of the recovery effort. >> on a clear day the view from staten island is run rivaled. but the island's very position is its vulnerability. it is here that the death toll from superstorm sandy was highest. the floodwaters ripped homes from their foundations. help was slow to arrive, say locals. there is still so much work left to do. >> this used to be my house. >> in midland beach, he barely survived the storm with his family. >> my mom started going in the ter, so i had to swim in the water and put the cordon my mom and lift it up. i didn't know how to swim, neither my mom or nephew. we asked a neighbor could we do in, and they said yes. >> everything is gone. he has been in a who tell no most of the past year. he put up tents where a house once stood, starting a charity for other victims,. >> the way it looks, it is going to take years to rebuild. we shouldn

high wind and flooding from hurricane sandy created massive destruction on america's eastern seaboard. hardest hit was new york's staten island. 23 people were stilled there. we traveled to staten island to check on the progress of the recovery effort. >> on a clear day the view from staten island is run rivaled. but the island's very position is its vulnerability. it is here that the death toll from superstorm sandy was highest. the floodwaters ripped homes from their foundations. help was slow to arrive, say locals. there is still so much work left to do. >> this used to be my house. >> in midland beach, he barely survived the storm with his family. >> my mom started going in the ter, so i had to swim in the water and put the cordon my mom and lift it up. i didn't know how to swim, neither my mom or nephew. we asked a neighbor could we do in, and they said yes. >> everything is gone. he has been in a who tell no most of the past year. he put up tents where a house once stood, starting a charity for other victims,. >> the way it looks, it is going to take years to rebuild. we shouldn

high pressure has been protecting the eastern seaboard, not just for this season but for quite some time as well. there's jerry way out in the middle of the atlantic ocean. because this area of high pressure will be steered back out to the east. it will make the recur va tur and back out to the eastern atlantic. the azores. we've not had a major hurricane hit the united states since will ma back in 2005. >> wow. it's been a long time. as we look here this morning, off to a warmer start. we're in the 50s across most of virginia. west virginia, maryland, the eastern shore. we have most areas in the 40s. we are already off to a warmer start. right now we are in the 50s but look at the afternoon highs expected around the metro area. we should be in the low 80s across most of fairfax county, much of montgomery county, high near 80. low 80s in prince gorges county and the district. much of the region will have a very light wind coming in out of the southwest and west. we'll have a few clouds around this afternoon. overall, quite a bit of sunshine. then after we reach those highs near 80 degree

as far as the americas goes, we have been watching this one storm system rolling across the eastern seaboard. now jetting off to the northeast. still lingering showers right near coastal areas. for the most part, high pressure is ridging in behind it. it is just making for some absolutely beautiful weather. the one foul weather spot is still going to be out towards the pacific northwest. a few lingering showers, even snow in the higher elevations. take a look at these temperatures. sunny skies dominating the forecast throughout much of central canada, even extending down towards the south. houston expecting 30, with sunny skies here. now, as far as europe goes, we do have several systems in the north. the one low pressure area continuing to spin down towards the mediterranean. that's bringing severe weather. actually, thunderstorm watches and advisories, and also flood watches in effect across much of italy, extending over towards the balkan peninsula as well. you'll continue to see the heavy rain showers. this front, though, that's going to be ushering in precipitation to the low countries.

take hurricane sandy, for example, the storm ravaging the eastern seaboard one of the largest on recordosting a record $60 billion in damages. hurricane katrina in 2005 was one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters in history at a cost of 108 billion dollars in damages, according to the national hurricane center, and the bb oil spill that poured millions of gallons of oil into the gulf was one of the worst offshore oil spills in history, and it cost me company over $40 billion to clean up the mess and compensate victims, and in the south, the drought is plaguing farmers and the local economy, and the south is suffering 7.2 billion dollars in crops and livestock. just a few examples there of natural disasters that took a toll on the economy. on was deadlocked, and this dragging on, the economic impact could be on par with disasters like these, and now they are looking for the next deadline, october 17, the day to raise the debt ceiling or risk running out of money to pay its bills, and many are predicting economic impacts that are much more serious than this current government
