america's eastern seaboard is getting its first taste of the wind and rain from hurricane florence. storm itself is still a few hours away, but it's a prelude of the damage florence could inflict when it does make landfall. the us national hurricane center is warning of life—threatening floods. this imaging from our forecasting team shows the hurricane‘s final approach. we'll be live in moorhead city in north carolina shortly but first our north america correspondent chris buckler sent this report from wilmington, north carolina. for days people have been preparing, and now the first of the strong wind and rain has really arrived. in 12 hours‘ time this weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly, causing real problems here. storm surge pushing water inland and this time tomorrow the eye of the storm is expected to be over the carolinas, potentially causing 2a hours or more of deeply disruptive weather. on the edge of the carolinas, the wind is strengthening and the water is rising. and this is just a taste of what florence threatens. the hurricane has been making a slow approach fro

further evacuation orders have been issued as storm florence stalls over the us eastern seaboard.to at least 23, with 17 deaths confirmed in south and north carolina. hundreds of people have been rescued and thousands are still in emergency shelters or without power. chris buckler is at pollocksville, north carolina. here in this part of north carolina, the grey skies have gone and you can see the sun but that does not mean the storm ‘s problems have gone away. if you look behind me you can see that this street has been covered in flood water. this is a river that has broken its banks. a mixture of that and high rainfall, and it has damaged businesses. if you look beside it will see a house that has had its front door breached by the height of this water. and that caused the huge amount of damage inside and destroyed peoples possessions. that is a worry going forward. the reality is, you can clear a ll forward. the reality is, you can clear all these branches, as they have done, that came down during the high wind, but it is the water dumped by the storm that is continuing to caus

much of this part of the eastern seaboard is not really very high at all. if you look at this, if you had a storm surge of just 9 to 10 feet, everything in red here is going to be submerged. and that is an awful lot of people, anderson. >> there's a lot of talk about this hurricane possibly stalling on the coast, just sitting there instead of moving inland. i was just talking to our last guest about that. can you explain the difficulties that that's going to bring? >> yeah. essentially, you have a pincer effect. this is what jennifer was talking about a little while ago. you have the water that's pushing in from the ocean, and it's piling up onshore. and at the same time, the inland rain is pushing water this way. and then you wind up with an indeterminant amount of water in some communities. and that storm surge really is where the damage comes. look at the record. if you go back to hurricane ike in 2008, storm surge, 15 to 20 feet. deaths, 103. $30 billion in damage. of course, we all know about katrina. you know it best, anderson, storm surge, 20 to 28 f
