on the eastern front, that is to say primarily the eastern european front, the sector of the war pitting germany and austria-hungary and their allies including bulgaria and the ottoman empire against russia is much less studied in the western front to this day the russians have not actually published an official military history or chronicle. the only ironic thing in retrospect about this book if you look at norman stone and his career is he's actually been in turkey now since the mid 1990s, teaching mostly in ankara where i used to teach. however, turkey doesn't play much of a role in that book. and i think that's just because of the timing of the research and the writing of it. when norman stone was first researching the eastern front, kind of the height of the cold war in the '60s and '70s, turkey wasn't really registering. that is to say, it was kind of a backwater in the cold war. you know, aside from maybe playing a role as a bit player in the cuban missile crisis, you didn't hear much about turkey. today, of course, things are very different. the 1990s reminded us of the importanc

that can become a small tree in our eastern woods. many of you are familiar with it from the drugstore. this is a very mild astringent. it's been respected and used for a long, long time. the primary center for production of witch hazel is connecticut. i think about 90% of the world's output is from connecticut. it's got an economic use. it's also an intriguing plant in that there are seed pods on it during the summer and flower buds being developed on it at the same time. those flower buds will keep developing and open up this fall right around the time the leaves begin dropping. so this was a striking plant for colonists to see blooming at an odd time of the year. they imbued with all of these different properties. they believed twigs make the best dowsing rods to find water underground with this plant. witch hazel meant it was bewitching and that it bloomed in an off season. the seed capsules later in the winter or early fall even when the weather is getting quite dry will turn brown. if you are in a woodland dominated by witch haz

on the eastern front, that is to say primarily the eastern european front, the sector of the war pitting germany and austria-hungary and their allies including bulgaria and the ottoman empire against russia is much less studied in the western front to this day the russians have not actually published an official mill trer history or chronicle. the only ironic thing in retrospect about this book if you look at norman stone and his career is he's actually been in turkey now since the mid 1990s, teaching mostly in ankara where i used to teach. however, turkey doesn't play much of a role in that book. and i think that's just because of the timing of the research and the writing of it. when norman stone was first researching the eastern front, kind of the height of the cold war in the '60s and '70s, turkey wasn't really registering. that is to say, it was kind of a backwater in the cold war. you know, aside from maybe playing a role as a bit player in the cuban missile crisis, you didn't hear much about turkey. today, of course, things are very different. the 1990s reminded us of the importan

diplomats as the armenian provinces of eastern turkey.reform plan was signed in february 1914, pursuant to the six eastern provinces. now with the russians had wanted was international gendarmes in eastern turkey, full recognition of some kind of autonomous status recognized as armenian provinces. they did not actually get it. the germans watered down many of these provisions. the germans kind of playing aÑ might say for the ottomans. but still the flag had been planted, so to speak. and so this was definitely at issue. the way the ottomans are seeing this of course is you have trojan horses in both directions. potentially you have the greek, bulgarian minority in western turkey and the armenians in the east. it's a very explosive question and it does have a lot to do with the tensions. and that is how the story ends. the first world war doesn't really end in the treaty of lausanne. and of course we christians sent in the other direction. most were actually gone by then. then of course, armenians most of them of course were either expell
