i' joe ebs. welcome to news 4 today. >>> and i'm eun yang. it is november 19th, as we mentioned, 2010. in the news this morning, we are foowing break news. right now the southbound lanes of the parkway are shut down in laurel after a deadly accident. a person was struck and killed on the parkway north of route 197. we were told that person had pulled of to the side of the road and were odds their car when they re hit. several other vehicles were also involved. everyone stayed in the scene. investigators are now tryingto reconstruct the accident to try toigure out exactly handicapped. the southbound lanes of the baltimore-washington parkway are expected to remain closed until thetart of the morning rush. we have a crew on the scene and we will bring you a live report as soon as we can. >>> three ople are in the hospital after they were pulled from a burning building in northwest washington. the fire broke out 10:30 last night kennedy street northwest. two women and a man were rush to the hospital suffering from smoem inhalation. no word on the

this crowd has been ebbing and flowing all morning.ick up because it 1.8 million traveler, expected to go through this one airport over the five-day thanksgiving holiday. many of those travelers will be seeing the controversy full body scanners and/or enhanced pat-down process for the first time, but so far no signs of that online campaign to opt out and slow down the process by refusing to go through the pat-down. now, tsa chief john pistole said there are 1,400 of those full body scanners in place at 70 u.s. airports and he wants to remind people they do not show faces. >> images are not stored, they're not capable of being stored or transmitted and no cell phone, cameras, aloud into the security rooms, so we've tried to build in the privacy. >> reporter: the u.s. considered particularly vulnerable simply because of the volume of air travelers. there are 700 million, more than that, actually, air travelers in this country every year. that is half the world's total. and i'm sure everybody remembers the so-called underwear bomber plann

ebs led to conviction of 121 individuals. lastly, the department believes it's important that workers have access to information and education. they need to make sound decisions for retirement. to that end, ebs has established a dedicated savings matters retirement savings education campaign. this campaign uses publications, online tools, videos, public service announcements and outreach to provide information to workers and employers. they help workers understand the importance of savings as well as their rights under arisa. most of the materials are available both in english and spanish. together the regulatory initiatives, education and outreach will help provide the tools that workers need to retire with confidence. so thank you, again, for this opportunity to testify at this important hearing. private sector retirement plans together with social security and individual savings are important components of assuring a defined -- dignified retirement. but more clearly needs to be done to strengthen the private sector retirem

i think as we've gotten further away from that, there's been an ebbing in the amount of pressure therek that's problematic. but i do think you see senator udall, harkin, there are other people if you go through the record, there's probably about 15, 20, 25 senators who have said something on the record about their openness to filibuster reform. so i really hope that the senator does push the issue because it's important even if it doesn't work at the opening of this new congress to get everybody on the record. >> is this one of those political party offense/defense questions? the democrats want to play defense, they'll let reform on this die so the republicans have no chance of being free from the filibuster if they gain the majority in 2012, but if the democrats went by offense, they should push this by what they could get done over the next two years would make holding on to the senate easier? >> i think there's a cultural distinction between the republican and democratic caucus. republicans tend to be m maximalists and democrats tend to be minimalists. we've seen this since 1994 and

beschloss, who is speaking after me tonight, will tell you that the degree of civility in congress has ebbedobbed over -- flowed over the years, and the chaplain has pointed out to us that at least we don't have a member taming another until unconsciousness as happened in 1856 when a representative of south carolina flogged a senator from massachusetts on the senate floor, but in modern times, i must agree with bob schieffer. i have not seen the degree of bitter, deviciveness and excessive partisanship now found in the senate. the weapon of choice today is not a metal-topped cane, but poisonous words. i would suggest to you that divided government, and a more evenly split senate is much more conducive to bipartisanship than our supermajority that one party controls of both the executive and legislature that are part of our current political landscape. when one party has all of the power, the temptation is to roll over the minority which in turn, leads to resentment and resistance because the minority has so few options. during the past two years, the minority party has been increasingly shut

so i think that in the ebbing, the rating of the heavens from.availability will still occur despite the efforts made to make the financial system safer. overhangs of durables are probably this -- disappearing and another headwind fading a bit of a disappearing and those things to depreciate, durable goods and business capital spending. but we see evidence of pent-up demand in the business sector for equipment that has been strong over recent quarters. productivity is likely to be growing less rapidly. i don't think it will fall back again but it's not going to be as strong as it was last year. that means as demand strengthens in the economy more will be passed through to the labor markets and therefore i think that will help household confidence and could get into more positive feedback within the -- one that we have now. i said it was a slow climb out of a deep hole. let's talk about the whole for a secondary one of the controversial aspects of the. >> situation is how much of the unemployment, the five percentage point increase in unemployment
