i'm joined by delta ceo ed bastian. good to have you with us this morning.good to be with you. protecting our people has been priority number one through out the pandemic as it always has been. we were one of the first companies to be out with wide-scale testing of all employees, sponsoring vaccines at all of our main locations right here in the state of georgia we hosted the largest vaccination site in the state, vaccinated hundreds of thousands of people, both georgia residents as well as our own people. we've already gotten up to 75% of our population that delta employees fully inoculated at this point. we know that's not good enough. with news of the final fda authorization for the vaccine being approved, it gives us the opportunity now to go to the next step and provide more stringent requirements on those people who have not been vaccinated. there's a few things we're going to do. first and foremost, masking works. we're going to make certain that any unvaccinated employee is wearing a mask at all times in our operations, particularly in indoor setting

$200 surcharge on their health insurance if they are not vaccinated in announcing the new policy, ed bastianaid the average hospital stay for covid-19 has cost delta $50,000 per person. this surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company keep in mind that 75% of the employees are already vaccinated what about the other 25% that comes out to about 17,000, 18,000 employees they are not vaccinated. so, they've got 75,000 employees. the goal is to get as close to having complete vaccination for all employees. and that's why delta is taking this approach. quickly also want to talk about american and southwest if you look at the four largest airlines in the u.s., you now have united and delta setting vaccine mandates, if you will. but you haven't heard anything from southwest and american. both airlines say they highly encourage their employees to get vaccinated but at this point, neither of those two airlines has made a decision to follow what we've seen from united and delta kelly? >> yeah, and it was interesting to read delta

lines is the latest corporation to put pressure on its employees to get vaccinated delta's ceo ed bastian in a memo wednesday announcing unvaccinated employees will face strict, new requirements, including weekly covid testing, and the unvaccinated will also get hit with a $200 monthly health care surcharge, the fee to cover the estimated $50,000 cost per patient for covid hospitalization. bastian writing, "it's necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company." is what delta is doing with this pandemic much the way companies say, if you're a smoker, you're going to have to pay an additional monthly fee for your health insurance at our company? >> that's a great comparison smokers have in the past been charged more now some companies are charging unvaccinated more because they are imposing costs. >> reporter: a welcome private industry decision for some airline passengers in miami. >> i feel a lot more safer. >> reporter: other passengers fear what it could mean beyond delta air lines. >> it sets a really terrible precedent for what the fut

. >> no, i was just going to say we also had, you know, tyson on one side but then we had ed bastian, you know, from delta on the other. he had an opportunity, he could decide he wanted to mandate it. >> it's not fully approved there is, i guess, some -- especially the liability instead of full fda approval. >> yours is a tougher question, andrew it's a bigger lift to require your customers who come in, particularly if the other airlines don't do it you see it in new york city where they say you have to show proof but it's probably a lot to ask -- >> i'll take the other side of it i think that if delta or one particular airline were to go first, they would actually get more people coming on their planes who are vaccinated. meaning, you'd actually fill up the planes because it would become a competitive advantage t. would disappear because hopefully others would do a similar thing. look, people wanted to go to danny myers indoor restaurants because they knew if they were going to eat indoors. >> my point is you don't need to have companies agree they'll have the employees vaccinated. i

not surprised and the reason i wasn't surprised is that delta actually tried early on, and i give ed bastian some credit, to work with the unions at delta to try to do a vaccine mandate. as you may know, they were unsuccessful with that as a result what they do have in place is a measure that all new employees of delta have to be vaccinated it's sort of a half step, in part because i think there's been union push back i'm less surprised on the southwest and -- given where they're based in texas there. >> that's a good point. >> the larger issue i would raise, all of us u.s. taxpayers paid to bail out these companies at a time when they desperately needed it and it is so clear to me if these companies say they have the social mission that they do, there's probably no better example of how you could fulfill that social mission by having as many people vaccinated as humanly possible. >> but unfortunately the bailouts have no strings so that's that. >> yeah. >> money gone. money sunk saved the airlines and we don't have a say at this point that's just the fact of the matter >> does that mean cov
