ed davis is with me the former commissioner of the boston police department.ith me sir. >> good morning, poppy. >> let's talk about what jean just said. it's policy in new york state prisons that they do not search outgoing mail unless the superintendent of the prison deems whoever it's coming from to be a security risk. richard matt killed two people escaped from prison previously. writes a letter to his daughter days before his escape saying i will see you on the outside. is that mail that should have been searched? >> certainly in looking back you find these problems. clearly if someone had seen that it could have changed this whole scenario. one of the problems that we have is there is a fire hose of information coming out of these institutions. we've worked with the internal physical security people here in the prisons and jailed in massachusetts. they're usually very good and up on what's happening. but when you have hundreds and thousands of prisoners in an institution, just the volume of data coming out of there is very difficult to manage. >> do you t

that commissioner is ed davis. former attorney general michael mukasey joins us as well why now? what is going on? >> charles, it's been a lot developed over the last five weeks across the nation. there have been eight separate arrests for terrorists activities. the agencies and police departments have developed enough probable cause to arrest or in some cases to take into custody people who have plotted to attack us. you add to that what isis has said recently, during ramadan period to attack western and other continents, and then the three attacks that occurred in africa europe, and the middle east last year. all of that stuff comes together and paints a very grim picture. >> i would think that, yes this is certainly that time, and yet do we have to be careful certainly vigilant? part of the threat is for us to live our lives differently. how do we deal with something like that? >> they have more of an ambition. they are very much into significant dates and significant anniversaries and so on. this is a year sinc

joined by legal analyst joey jackson and the former commissioner of the boston police department ed daviscarol. good morning. >> good morning, carol. >> joey just your reaction to what happened in the courtroom? >> you know, it's a preliminary step in the process and it's the first step carol. an indictment as defense attorneys remind everyone is an accusation. now it moves forward to being proved but i think with the $1 million, it shows it's a very serious case. of course murder carries life in jail. he's also charged with manslaughter which is 3 to 11 years. ultimately with the judge setting a $1 million bail it appears this is a matter that's going to proceed forward and he's going to have to defend. in terms of the nature of the defense, it may meet great difficulty depending upon and looking at that videotape. the video doesn't lie, and when you look at the videotape and match it against the report there's a lot of explaining the defense has to do here. >> exactly. and, ed is there any way to explain what happened? the prosecutor even the initial traffic stop the prosecutor in hamil
