very meaningful thing for me to be here tonight on the night we are giving a lifetime of work to ed harrington. [applause] when i arrived in san francisco coming out of state employment some six years ago or so, ed was very generous in giving me advice. to say -- i will call. why are we doing this? who can i ask this question of? if i think it may have political implications or just to bounce it off him, he always has great devicadvice. personal thanks to ed harrington, as well. i will turn it back over to r m our emcee. >> a big round of applause. >> commissioners, i want to take this opportunity to thank my good friend ed harrington. i know he will be here until the 22nd of september. i will be returning from my vacation in europe. >> nice. >> in october. i want to thank him for all he has done. i am also very happy that we have a brother now in holland so that the will of the people can be done. we need to focus on the sewer system improvement project. some of the contractors are here and some of the contractors were here the last time i spoke. you have to look at it in a holistic way. they can get the opportunities to training so when the time comes to do the job, we have skilled workers because this is not only about temporary jobs. we keep saying it again and again and again. we need career jobs so our people can go to a better place. i was that the unions to initiate the laborers union, 761 initiation fees, this come about and the other. -- this, that, and the other. it kind of makes a young man feel proud. this time around, we are happy because they're going to be working for a company who is going to keep t

also, ed harrington for nominating me. also, a special thanks to my family. mason, kelly, tray, my wife, naomi, my sister joy, and my mother-in-law. they have been supporting me for a long time. behind this individual all board, there's a team of people that are responsible for making things happen. just for a moment, i want the puc to raise their hand and give a shout. we have a lot of folks who really committed in making the systems wwork. again, we have billions of dollars that we are entrusted with delivering in a timely way, which needs to be within budget. systems like this will really elevate and make it really transparent that we are delivering these programs in a very conscious and deliberate way so we can save the ratepayers' money. with that, i just want to thank you guys for this award. thank you. [applause] >> next, we're going to hear from ed harrington, the general manager of the sfpuc. >> good. thank you for being here. i will be quick. i wanted to. spur and the folks behind me for the collaboration. a lot of us learned how much their love is for this plays out here and now we need to protect it. supervisor mar mentioned the sand management. you can see a lot of concrete. people do not like that. up the road, there is too much sand, morse and then you can imagine. in the old days, you could walk down on the beach. now you walk straight out onto the beach. we will be moving 100,000 cubic yards of that sand here. there was a meeting on making this work. that is very useful. our waste water system and our sewer infrastructure is something that is so large, you do not rearrange it quickly easily. if you were on the great highway, our sewer is the entire
