former pennsylvania governor ed rendell is also an nbc news political analyst, joins us from philadelphia. michael steele is here, the former republican national chairman and msnbc analyst as well. thank you both very much. governor rendell, first to you, because on cbs this morning, you were asked about the president's and the white house's counter to the bad jobs numbers on friday and you said to keep pointing the finger of blame at someone else doesn't resonate anymore. people are getting sort of tired of that. do you think that it's not effective for the obama camp to keep blaming george w. bush and what they inherited? >> i wouldn't blame president bush but i would continue to point out i said earlier, andrea, it's good for people to remember that we were losing 750,000 jobs a month when the president took over. that's what he's inherited. though 84,000 may not sound like much in terms of a gain, it's a whole lot better than losing 750,000. i think he's doing the right thing there. he's also doing the right thing in stressing his jobs bill. his jobs bill contained 11 separate compone

that's been done. >> absolutely. >> ed rendell, thank you so much.eat to see you. >>> joining me now to discuss the effectiveness of the bain attacks and other things, "time" magazine's political columnist, joe klein. you have been writing about this and your take on the bain attacks and whether or not it works and whether mitt romney has to figure out a better way around it? >> well, clearly it's working. romney's been on the defensive for two weeks now and you know, from the beginning, it seemed that the research, the focus groups and all that, were very, very powerful on this subject, that this was a major attack that obama could launch. what we're seeing now is very similar to the major attacks that were launched in 1988 against michael dukakis by george h.w. bush and in 2004 by george w. bush against john kerry, the swift boating. all three of these politicians come from massachusetts. i wonder if it's something in the water there. but what you're seeing is very carefully constructed box. there are small nails that go into the box and there's so

despite the fact that ed rendell and corey booker don't like it. certain swing states it's making a difference. >> people are undecided voters and romney campaign went up seven or eight states rebutting the bain attack. i do think it's effective but their polling shows that they are responding to this ad. otherwise they won't be wasting money on it in nine states. >> sean: one thing the president ran a very different campaign back in 2008, hope and change and he is going to bring the country together. he has lectured the country many times about tone and civility and he goes on attack, war on women, war on dogs, war on bain. >> between the guy that ran for president and what he has done. if you want to win you have to draw a distinction who he advertised himself as and who he has been. with respect to the ads, nothing is more powerful than the voice of a regular people. you need to put regular people in these ads who have been affected by these policies. not politicians, not outsiders but regular americans and that will work on both sides. >> sean:
