two weeks ago there was a three-alarm fire in district six in the tenderloin at 217 eddie. fortunately and unfortunately, the property is run by one of our nonprofit agencies, tenderloin housing development corporation. approximately 105 units, 125 residents, were all displaced that night at roughly about 9:00 p.m. our office was there as well, along with the san francisco fire department and h.s.a. and red cross and really just wanted to commend -- it was the first time i was out for a large fire. it was amazing to see how the city works together to really provide emergency services to our seniors, our disabled and our families and youth. we were very fortunate in this case that tndc was the landlord. their staff came in late at night, pulled out the roster of tenants, were able to identify which tenants would need housing immediately, what special needs they had, what medication was needed to be provided. last minute they were able to put up two shelters. the following day at 6:00 in the morning, along with red cross, they were able to start aggressively housing their hig

one day eddy and i were talking about what this place is, and eddy said, you know, for kids like yound me, if we came to the institute, we'd never go home, and if you haven't had a chance yet to look at what the place will look like, there's reppedderringings -- renderings outside the tent to the left and there's a model. if you haven't already, take the time to look at the model. at the core of what we have is a representation of the u.s. senate and the hundred seats and desks there will come alive for young people and everybody in this tent helped to make that happen. i want to thank you so much. couple of notes here for you. the institute is an important part of umass boston, and when you join umass boston, you become part of a family, and the folks at umass boston could not have been kinder or more effective in making this work, and so for all the people who are here who work were umass boston, from the baht father or mother of -- bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for what you did and what you do. [applause] by the way, when you look at the model and the renderings, one of

every one of them we talked to: eddie vedder, michael stipe, jewel, you know, was just a kid. adam yauch very much-- he's a buddhist, and this is-- he is organizing on buddhist principles, particularly in terms of non-violence, and these tibetan freedom concerts that are now, i think, in their fourth year, these are some of the hugest rock and roll events ever held actually, and some of the most amazing artists of-- across the board participating. they do it because adam asks, and he's willing to go out there, because he has learned that it's something that can make a difference, and again, one of the stories-- we talk about this all the time. it's amazing to me. he grew up in new york city when the no nukes concerts were held here in the late '70s. there was a big rally in battery park, and it was a free rally. pete seeger performed. crosby, stills, and nash performed, and adam yauch was a teenager, probably couldn't drive yet, came down and handed out leaflets for antinuclear activism. now, he grew up with that tradition. his parents were against the war, but he remembered--

speaker, eddie kay had excellent treatment when he was in hospital recently, and i'm glad to say he's recovering well. but while he was in hospital, his operation was cancelled four times. he was told also about the closure of beds and the redundancy of nurses onward -- in his ward. doesn't the prime minister's wrong to claim he was not shut the nhs? >> the claim i would make to the honorable gentleman. of course, there are things that go wrong in our national health service and that's one of the reasons why i think we need to reform and modernize it. but the fact is, there was only one party at the last election that said we're going to increase the nhs in real terms and that is exactly what we're doing. and he should have words if he's worried about nhs cuts, have words with his colleagues in wales who are proposing to cut the national health service, not in cash terms but in real terms now planning to do that and he should help us put a stop to it. >> steven gilbert. >> i'm grateful, mr. speaker. across the country 2 million families are on waiting lists for social housing. almost
