amy: that brings us to professor eddie glaude. professor, you tweeted this quote from james baldwin, "it has always seemed much easier to murder than to change. and this is really the choice with which we are confronted now." explain. prof. glaude: well, you know, there's a sense in which the reckoning that we find ourselves involves the question of whether or not we're going to fundamentally embrace the idea that we are a multiracial democracy. and the history of the country suggests that we constantly, when faced with that question, will double down on violence, that white america will choose violence to defend its way of life, to defend those noxious assumptions that have, in some ways, led to the organization of our way of life predicated upon this idea that white peoplought to b valued more than others, that they will in fact exact a ceain kind of violence to defend that view. and so, baldwin, in this moment, is kind of marking this, right? that america is always talking about it changing, but it never changes, right? and so,

how do we get our head around this, eddie?f you're teaching your students, what would you tell them to think about the racial disparity in law enforcement? >> you know, i've been trying to wrap my mind around it, andrea. every day experience african-americans are making distinctions. we could get killed during a traffic stop. we could lose our child playing at a park. we see video footage of police peacefully arresting a white man with a knife. we see it all the time. there's a glaring example in which citizenship operates in this country. there are some that have the right to protest. they feel a sense of possession. then there are others who are viewed as citizens, but don't have the same right to protest, who are often viewed as those people who should be grateful. i would think about introducing my students to a concept i'm thinking -- i'm mulling around in my head calling it tenuated citizenship. that's the way it seems. that's the way it looked yesterday. >> just to make the point, these weren't protests. these were dome

eddy, i'll go back to you.fore that angry black protesters talking about insurrection were going to be coming to the capitol. think they may have prepared differently? there were capitol hill cops doing all they could do. you look at the video. >> they were outnumbered. >> and many of them are heroes. there are a couple that deserve the presidential medal of freedom. >> yes. >> but this is important to remember. none of this would have happened if it had been angry black radical insurrectionists bragging about a coming rally and riot in the nation's capitol to over turn election results. eddy, i'll just put that ball on the tee, and you just hit that ball out of the park. >> yeah. yeah. you know, hopefully. it seems to me it's very clear that in this country, there is a version of citizenship for some people, that they're free to dissent, that they're free to express their ownership of the country, their sense that america is theirs and there are others of us that need to just shut up and be grateful. and that

eddie gave them the -- it gave not had issues they had it first and created new enemies of federalist policy. so hamilton's financial plan would be part of the wedge between his increasing divide in this era between the federalist and what will be the opposition headed by thomas jefferson. some people are still angry about how the new government was formed. many are angry about speculators and financiers seeming to get the best deal out of this new government. becoming an feared industrialized nation of wealthy backingsts, these men the federal government and dependent wage workers. that thise feared republic that depended they smalled on independent farms, on the family could at last, the road and wanted was trying to take the republic on was demagoguery and aristocracy. the musical hamilton is given a more resounding view of this. i will give a couple of quotations from hamilton and jefferson. jefferson wrote it is better to carry provisions and materials in europe than to bring them to provisions and materials and with them their manners and principles. transportation will be made

eddie van der walt joins us now.- i have been reading all sorts of commentary around gamestop, as has everybody. one of the links we have not necessarily explored is between bitcoin and this gamestop phenomenon or this retail investor phenomenon. is this the same crowd? is this the same groups of traders, same groups of retail investors? i wonder what it does to your psychology around investment, if you are scolding an asset that does not have much to do with fundamentals and then translate that to wall street. at e: are we talking about -- eddie: are we talking about bitcoin, are we talking about gamestop? there is definitely some overlap in terms of the investor base. there is definitely some investors who are risk seeking and looking for the next big hot asset. therefore, potentially, some of this attention we have seen in stocks like gamestop that just rally phenomenally has taken some of the attention away from bitcoin. i think the underlying fact is that, you know, all of this, all of this activity that we are
