eddie thornton jr. was visiting his mother that runs a day care in the complex. >> a guy came out and started to shoot him. and i saw my son fall in the car and he ran to his car, had he went to his car, he got his gun. >> as barbara thornton called 911, she heard the rapid gun fire. >> my son's gun, evidently was going, da, da, da, and the other gentleman was just shooting at anything and everything. and my son came to the car and said it's okay, mom, get up. and when i got up i saw him and he was shot. that's when i went bonkers. >> reporter: and a 12-year-old girl was hit. barbara thornton is proud of her son who says he probably saved her life and the life of others. >> i am blessed, and i thank god that my son was there. at the time, i was hoping that he wouldn't do anything, but he did. and i am just glad that he is safe. i don't know how many people would have gotten shot if he had not been. but the man just kept walking towards us. >> reporter: the suspect also remains hospitalizeedthis morning.

his family identified him as eddie thornton jr. he was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex right across the street from nasa in greenbelt. family members say he pulled into the parking lot to visit his mother, who runs a day care at the complex. police say he witnessed a man firing shots randomly in the parking lot. investigators say it was connected to the suspect arguing with his roommate at the complex, and that roommate is a military officer at ft. myer. the suspect had his roommate's military weapon when he began firing. officer thornton and the suspect exchanged gunfire. both were hit, and a 12-year-old girl in a nearby apartment was grazed by a stray bullet. police tell us none of the injuries is life-threatening. that's good news this morning. family members tell us last night that officer thornton was cautious and talking so good news there. back to you, eun and joe. >> thanks very much. >> this is the second shooting involving a capitol police officer in just two days. on wednesday, officers were forced to kil
