mary frances berry and marian wright edelman. us.re glad you have joined those conversations coming up right now. ♪ by contributions to your pbs station from viewers like you. thank you. tavis: dr. algernon austin is the author of "the unfinished march." good to have you on this program, sir. i want to jump right in, there in-depth you have done research on to give us some sort of portrait of where we are and where we are not, 50 years later. i want to jump right in and go in this particular order. first, these ghettos of poverty. how is it, why is it that 50 years after king tried to ring this bell, poverty is still threatening our democracy? how is it that poverty is now a matter of national security? >> the thing is is that there was some policies that importantly reduced poverty. but our commitment to poverty has really waned over the 70's, 80's, and in recent years. we have allowed a number of prevent all workers firm really sharing in prosperity. for example, one of the demands of the march was for a decent minimum wage. a

hotel here in washington and that is where we sat down with three civil rights leaders, marion wright edelmanent of the children's defense fund, andrew young, the former mayor of atlanta, and former georgia state legislator julian bond. all of them were part of the march on washington. >> when the trains started unloading from the south and train load from philadelphia and then the movie stars flew in, then i realized that this was really something big. >> pelley: on that day, what did you think would be achieved by the march on washington? what could be accomplished? >> in dr. king's speech and in the speeches of the other people, we had explained here are the problems we're facing, these are the reasons why we're here, we're marching, we're protesting, we're sitting in. we've had several years of disruption around the country and we've shown you about it, now do something about it. >> the southern christian leadership conference and martin luther king set out to redeem the soul of america from the triple evils of racism, war, and poverty. now, i think we've made enormous progress on legal r

joining me now, ceo of edelman financial services. you hate these plans. why?do the job. they only pay for tuition, not room and board which is half the cost of college. you have to go to an end stays cool. what happens if you move? what if the kid is not want to go? and the state has to honor its obligation which in part to many cases the states are not doing. gerri: we have seen that already in a number of ways. here is the hook, how they pitch parents. lock in today's college costs. tuition is the one thing that has been going up no matter what . as much as 5% per year, even though we have been in recession . says the idea is really attractive to people. why not just make sure you are paying today's costs tomorrow? >> because it is an offer that they are not able to guarantee. think about it. when you get your money to the state, what are they doing to it? they have proven themselves and it will to invest money for their chance necessary to honor the deal. second, you get is essentially the tuition inflation weight. would be better to invest that money in th
