eden canyon road.nately this is a fatal crash and it all started off with some calls in to chp that a tractor-trailer broke down that was sitting in the left center lane. then a crash that involved a sedan and another semi. it was pinned between the two ptrucks. unfortunately, that person did not survive. the investigation ongoing. it always takes several hours. right now traffic wise we are looking at a really tough situation. only the off ramp is open to eden canyon road. all of 580 shut down. all of these folks are waiting to get off on to the off ramp. about an 11-mile backup at this point. we are looking at long delays back into the dublin area. it's well past 680 tip. the surface street that runs the surface street that runs parallel and head north on 680. head into the sunol area. amy, how is it looking now? >> reporter: we're moving. we've gone 0.3 of a mile in an hour. we just witnessed two big rigs slam into each other. one rear-ended the other. they both hopped out of their truck, checked it

the off ramp at eden canyon is open. take that video you are looking at the backup. look at this. the head lights coming westbound and over on the right side that small roadway is dublin canyon boulevard. the chopper is actually a live shot because you can see those taillights going away from us, they are moving eastbound. at the top of the screen you see taillights and head lights across the screen. that would be 680 coming out of dublin toward pleasanton that's way at the very top of the screen. in the upper left-hand corner there is the head lights, that is a huge backup. let a me show you how that plays out on our waze system. waze is calculating the drive times and look at this we have three routes mapped out. coming out of san ramone if you travel through that backup in castro valley it is jomd solid, it's three hours and ten minutes to get through the area. that's a huge delay. if you go these other routes heading down through sunol we're saving you two and a half hours from your commute. make sure you join our te

heading out of dublin and in toward castro valley this is west 580 at eden canyon road. this will be a major problem. let me show you where this has cut off the traffic flow. this is coming from dublin interchange. it is cut off right here, eden canyon road, castro valley boulevard that entire corridor is coming off of the dublin grade and it is jammed right now. i'm not sure what they are going to do about the cars stuck on the roadway. you might have to head south down toward 680 through niles canyon and make mission over toward 8806789 i know that's a long way but just stay clear of this crash. this will be an issue. we don't know when chp expects to clear it because we are still trying to get the details on the extent of the crash and injuries. maybe there's fluid hopefully it's not fuel through the area. you can go north if you're north of the interchange, if over toward highway 24 and get around this as well. again, i expect this to be a problem for a couple hours at the very least. we will see how it develops. perhaps i'm wrong with the details that first came in

on westbound 580 right before the eden canyon road exit. kpix 5's jackie ward has been at the scene since the crash. jackie. >> reporter: kenny, here we are nearly 8 hours after this accident happened and still, two lanes remain closed. what a miserable morning for thousands of commuters who rely on westbound 580 to get where they need to go. this affected alternate routes of the surrounding area, too. westbound 580 near castro valley was not where you wanted to be this morning. this is the result of an accident that happened around 4:15 a.m. a sedan hit the front of a big rig causing the truck to lose steering input. the driver came to a stop in the second from the right lane and was stopped there for three to five minutes. during that time another westbound big rig on 580 hit the truck, couldn't brake. this is all that's left of the front of that semi. >> why he didn't see him stopped in the lane i don't know. unfortunately, we can't ask him that question because he died. the other two drivers were transported for minor injuries. >> repor
