noticed that there was the bishops, the nobility, and the comments, by which edmund burke was a member. he said there was a for the state "in the reporters' gallery yonder, more important by far than all of them." i think understood that, if we're to have an educated and informed populace, if we want to be able to really embrace those notions of freedom of speech and freedom of expression, we need to have a press that lives up to those obligations as a fourth estate. there are a lot of press codes and journalistic ethics codes, literally hundreds of them out there. but they do center on the importance of impartiality, of fairness, of accuracy, and making sure that the story gets out. so i am thinking about what we would like to see and what the public deserves in the upcoming election. it really centers on the notion that it is not the role of the media to pronounce judgment, but, instead, to report and allow us to decide, as the phrases sometimes use over at fox. to get the story right, not always be so worried about getting it first, but get the story right and get that story

and, of course, all the politics of the time with people like edmund burke and others who are on the side of american point of view, to a point. they still call them our colonies. and the milieu of it all. and the same kind of book could be written on the civil war, all that was going on on the civil war. i would love to read a book about charles wilson peale, the philadelphia painter, who is into everything. you talk about the kind of 18th century enthusiast who was a painter and a tinkerer with mechanical devices, inventor, an archeologist, a soldier, a politician. he was everything. and he wrote wonderful letters and kept a great diary. he knew everybody. and the idea of doing someone who isn't a politician and who isn't a general or a soldier appeals to me. >> no interest in the present? i mean, you know, in your hife time -- >> no. no. >> no more harry truman? >> well, that's not quite the present. >> but, i mean, in your lifetime. >> in my lifetime, not particularly. i think i'll stay in the 18th century. i really like it there and i'm starting to know everybody. and i like the

edmund burke said we will be free of the chains that we put upon ourselves, but we will be constrainede chains that men put upon house if we -- put upon us if we do not help ourselves. [applause] ronald reagan understood that faith and family means freedom in america. [applause] that it all works together. i know we are concerned right now about the economy in this country. and we have talked about economic liberty and limited government and balanced budgets and less spending and strong families and faith and commitment. all of those things work together to make america work. it fits. you cannot have limited government unless you have free people living good and decent and moral lives, and strong families to help each other around, so you do not need government to come in and pick up the pieces when families and communities breakdown. you cannot have a strong national defense unless you have a strong national economy, and people going out and prospering and living lives that allow us to grow and create the dynamism that our country has -- our economy has created. then you can afford to

edmund burke understood that. thankfully, senators boxer and inhofe really understand it too. i want to thank them for that. mr. president, i suggest -- mr. president, i now ask to speak on another matter. mr. president, president truman once said healthy citizens constitute our greatest national resource. two years ago last week we passed the affordable care act. we passed it to help give every american access to quality, affordable health care. people like zeez from helena, montana know how much this health care law provides. doctors diagnosed her by age seven. by high school she carried an oxygen tank. she received a double lung transplant. even with insurance companies, she and her family paid tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket. things looked even worse when she hit an arbitrary coverage limit. if she had lost her insurance before health reform, she might not have been able to find any insurance coverage at all. insurance companies could have turned her away simply because she was born with cystic fibrosis. but know thanks to the affordable care act, she will alway

as edmund burke indicated, it is circumstances and not abstract principles that foster any religious policy whether toxic to any human being. the question is whether there is a relationship between the emergence of islamism and clear discourse and between black or the existence of religious freedom more liberal democracy. looking at the past, looking at the formation of a cell see movement in egypt, the establishment of the muslim brotherhood in 1928, whether at that time, the lack of religious freedom was important, whether it played a role in the formation of modern islamism or whether providing more religious freedom we wouldn't get the situation. we found a lack of importance of that factor. they have many complaints regarding the west. perhaps, effuses democracy, he will use it in the-. negative. the second assumption is also worth some consideration. there is an acceptance in this statement of the claim by islamism to be an authentic representation and interpretation of islam. this islamism claims to be so, something that is obvious to anyone that that claim is correct or that
