rich edson at baylor university here in dallas. what do we know about the survivors? >> what we are hearing from the police department and hospital officials is absolutely nothing on the condition on the statistics, how many people they're treating and what their conditions are. we're learning of the stories of theictims and survivors and those recovering through family members and friends coming to the hospital and telling us of what their loved ones had gone through. one, dallas area rapid transit officer misty mcbride was shot in the abdomen and arm. a bullet broke her shoulder and her friends tell the ap all she wanted to do was return to work the next day. she is the mother of a 10-year-old. when she was shot according to the ap, she called beneath a police car, a fellow police officer gathered her and took her to the hospital where she is recovering. there is dallas police officer gretchen rochesta. she was wounded by shrapnel. she grew up in beaver dam wisconsin. she interned at the madson, wisconsin police department and used her spanish language skills to be

rich edson is live in cleveland with more. so how did it shape up? >> reporter: good morning. the protests have begun outside the convention. and inside the convention. you saw that moment right there, the anti-trump faction a last ditch effort after failing in the rules committee, essentially allowing the delegates to vote for whomever they want on the first ballot that could potentially derail donald trump's securing of the nomination later today. those efforts were beaten back, the chair said, look, the pro trump people have it, let's move on. there were protests. some folks even walked out. >> the motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. i'm not going to do this. >> former house speaker and trump supporter and a man once considered to be potentially a vice presidential pick for donald trump, newt gingrich, spoke about that effort and he said essentially those folks need to concede. >> people when they lose get very intense and i think that they feel strongly about their position, but they didn't have the votes. they couldn't get it in order, they couldn't win last week

rich edson is outside baylor medical center in dallas where they're treating some of the wounded. rich? >> reporter: we have been speaking with staff here at baylor university medical center. they are offering us no specifics on those they are still treating here. they, nor the dallas police department, will give us specifics on the injured officers, what their condition is, and how many are still being treat here. we do expect to speak to some doctors win the next hour. we know police officers and police cruisers have been coming by the hospital through the morning and the afternoon, reportedly the police chief and the mayor have been here, visiting as well, and the numbers, of course, as we have been reporting, 12 officers shot, five of whom died. seven injured. and two civilians, and you alluded to it, one remarkable story when it comes to one of those civilians. >> i wanted to know what you could tell us about the story of the mom who was trying to shield her little kid in the middle of all hell breaking loose. >> the brought four of her sons down to this demonstration. she sa

rich edson is live on capitol hill the latest on this one. rich, what can you tell us? reporter: in just a few hours the senate will vote on a couple bills dealing with immigration, the procedural vote, the first is called caselaw. it would boost minimum sentences for immigration to repeatedly enter the country illegally. that is named for kate steinle, she's a woman who was shot and killed last year on the san francisco.. the suspect, juan lopez-sanchez had been deported multiple times and had felony convictions. the second would brought congressional funding for cities that ban police cooperation with federal immigration officials when dealing with deportations. those are so-called sanctuary cities, san francisco is one of them.philadelphia is another. pennsylvania senator pat toomey has introduced that proposal and he is up for reelection this year. the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says these bills would help prevent another tragedy like the one that happened last year in san francisco with kate steinle. reporter: >> the responsible policy led to a young wo
