[applause] >> well, welcome. hall, everyone. it is my pleasure to welcome all of you here to the seventh annual philippine-american celebration heritage month. counsel general, thank you. mayer brown, thank you very much. i know you are out there somewhere. board president, thank you for being here as well. i am is so happy, because we have a lot of things to celebrate. and i want to first and foremost thank one of the people that i have had a chance to work with, and i think she is a proud member of the filipino-american community here in san francisco, and that has been my chief adviser on families, children, education, and of course she is the president of our school board. hydra mendoza, thank you. thank you for being here. [applause] you know, as we celebrate filipino history month, we recognize the filipino history that is inextricably a part of our city's history. and during the historic struggle that we kept seniors -- remember those years where we stood on an alliance to protect our senior residence of t

[applause] >> you are talking to one of the happiest people in san francisco. this was an extraordinary an historic vote. but it was symbolic. remember, the new board of supervisors who convenes tomorrow will make the actual decision on who the next mayor will be. >> everybody came down to ed lee with the expectation that it will be done in the most intellectually honest way and in a way that role and order is respected. i think we discussed a few nominations and came down to this one by a common denominator. >> i had a sense of urgency because i did not want to see anyone being acting mayor in the presence of the board of supervisors. that is not the kind of transition i talked about. we need to have a transition -- legislative branch separate from the executive branch of san francisco. that is the best way to do our work. people would not like the situation of having an acting mayor and president of the board of supervisors. >> now the dominoes in this chain of political events were

[applause] >> thank you. good morning. it has been our honor and pleasure to join all of you here at the st. francis yacht club to celebrate and welcome the fleet to fleet week. this is the 30th anniversary of our fleet week. senator feinstein really helped to restart this. i want to personally thank her for her leadership in doing this. may god be with her as she is helping run the country in these very part-time -- very hard times. this 30th anniversary is very special for us. this year, we have more marines and navy personnel, and coasties and we have ever seen before. it is growing. it has been a tradition and it is also something we chairs, being part of a great city and country. i want to make sure we understand that this has been and always will be our opportunity to honor the men and women in our military for their dedication and devotion. san francisco will always carry on this tradition in the best way possible. thank you all for coming. [applause] >> thank you. well, welcome, everyone. tonight, a very special. you know, some of you know that i used to work at the asian law caucus, and we had a really tight relationship with the filipino community. at that time, my counterpart and i were in together. we always worked on h1 issues and immigration issues. he always told me about hanoi power, but he never explained to me panai power. what is that all about -- he never explained to me pinay power. i want to welcome everybody from all across the country who is here. i also want to make sure recognize -- because we had the mayor of hercules, right? myrna, my counterpart, thank you very much. we have the former mayor of the sleepy town of colma. thank you for being here. and also the former mayor of davis. thank you. our first speaker today -- i am honored and proud to introduce the mayor of san francisco, edwin lee.ause] >> good morning. it is my personal honor to join you to commemorate 9/11 from our police, fire, paramedics, volunteers coming to grips citizens of san francisco. a decade after the terrorist attacks that occurred on september 11, we continue the struggle to make sense of the terrible events of that day. san francisco is more than 3,000 miles away from the attacks. we felt the devastation and loss keenly here in the city. we will continue to remember and honor those who perished. it is important to me and the people of san francisco that we remember and honor the fallen, including hometown heroes like betty and mark. betty's phone call was the first indication that america was under attack. she relayed vital information to the ground crew. mark wrestled with control of flight 93 rather than allow hijackers to fulfill their mission. 10 years ago, we also learned about the final moments of san francisco resident melissa's hughes who was a victim of terrorism in the towers. to read a

[applause] >> our next speaker is edwin lee, mayor of san francisco. he first began working for the city and county of san francisco in 1989 as the investigator for the city's first whistleblowing ordinance and has since served as executive director of the human rights commission, director of the city purchasing, and director of the department of public works before he was first appointed as the city administrator in 2005. please join me in welcoming mayor lee. [applause] i just had a couple of other recognitions. we're joined by the small business commission. thank you for joining us. >> next we have the committee advocate of the year award. an amazing woman, who formed sage, and years ago i was able to sit in on her classes. are you familiar with those? she is unbelievable. she would show up in a pink suit and talk to men who were basically arrested for soliciting women for sex and she would talk about as tv's -- std's and why this is wrong and then she transformed a talked- about why she was a particular prostitute. she would actually point at man and say you picked me up five years ago, remember? i was floored by this. the other thing she did, she said, how many of you have kids.

[applause] in my previous life, and you know this as a fact, i used to be a civil rights attorney before i started working in government, and it means so much, especially now since carlos and i are from is burt -- immigrant families, and now we have to be leaders of immigrant families to seek good legislation and promises that really start filling the challenges of our youth. not to be able to fill the stream all over the country is the incredible challenge we have before us. we made a great statement in the state of california. i want to make sure we build on that. that is why i came here today. i rushed to mak

[applause] >> good afternoon. welcome. thank you very much for the introduction. i have a lot to be happy about this day because it is the 100th anniversary celebrating international women's day, and to tell you we have quite a bit to celebrate. we have probably the highest number of women commissioners ever in the history of the city today. isn't that wonderful? [applause] we have clearly a good and growing balance of women, on the board of supervisors, commissioners, and department heads as well. i'm extremely proud to be heading up this very complicated city. [laughter] one that does not let me sleep very much, but certainly it -- i have said this in many cases, just literally these eight weeks i have fallen in love with this city even deeper because it is such a wonderful place to be. every community i visit, every corridor that we walk together, it fascinates me house on many other people who live and work here -- but even those who don't -- just love this city and they do what they can to make sure that it is running

[applause] >> good afternoon. my pleasure to celebrate with you latino heritage month in san francisco. welcome! we live in a very unique place. i know the history of our own city has been wonderfully filled with people from the south to move to appear in the 1970's and 1980's. i want to thank all of the consul generals here representing your country and continuing to work with san francisco to make sure that we have good policies to welcome all of our immigrant visitors, families, and the reunification of families. thank you for your great service to our city. i have been privileged to be the mayor of this wonderful, diversite -- diverse city. latino heritage month celebrates all of the contributions of latinos from all different walks of life. from the police department, to the libraries, to the 311 center, to public servants of the board of supervisors, to even retired state senators. it has been a great tradition. this city is recognizing that very much. we often talk about the increase in population. it is ve
